President Bush's legacy

1.Facing opposition in Congress, Bush held town hall-style public meetings across the U.S. in 2001 to increase public support for his plan for a $1.35 trillion tax cut program — one of the largest tax cuts in U.S. history

2.Under the Bush Administration, unemployment peaked at a high of 6.2% in June 2003, and is currently at a low of 4.4%

3.The economy has remained strong, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average setting several record highs and the GDP experiencing healthy growth.

4.Bush increased funding for the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health in his first years of office, and created education programs to strengthen the grounding in science and mathematics for American high school students.

5.Republican efforts to pass the Medicare Act of 2003, which added prescription drug coverage to Medicare and created Health Savings Accounts, which would permit people to set aside a portion of their Medicare tax to build a "nest egg". The retired persons lobby group AARP worked with the Bush Administration on the program and gave their endorsement.

6.In 2006, Bush declared the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands a national monument, creating the largest marine reserve to date. It comprises 84 million acres and is home to 7,000 species of fish, birds and other marine animals, many of which are specific to only those islands.

7.On July 19, 2006, Bush used his veto power for the first time in his presidency to veto the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, a bill that would have reversed the Dickey Amendment, permitting federal money to be used for research where stem cells are derived from the destruction of an embryo.

I have yet to even address the Supreme Court Judges he appointed, or what he has done to protect this country from any attacks from Terrorist since Sept 11, 2001..and May I remind you the threat is not over, just look across the pond, to Glasgow , Scotland today.

Do you ever actually bother to do any thinking for yourself? Or is mindlessly repeating the slogans from Tancredo the sum total of your intellectual abilities?

The VERY crises you all have been screaming about for the last 4 years now will remain completely unchanged until at least 2009. The only people who won anything here were the Illegals.

However, since you got to vent your hate at everyone in DC because of the miserable mess you made of your pathetic life, I guess maybe it seems like a win to you.

Well guess what clown, the Status Quo on Immigration, which all you claim is “Destroying the country” is now in place for at least 2 more years since no one is going to touch Immigration until after 2008.

For a man bleeding to death from a wound in the belly, the status quo is unacceptable ...

However, shooting himself in the head, while it clearly would change the status quo, is probably not the right answer.

I sense that this so-called 'End of the Bush Presidency' isnt over yet and not by a long shot.

There a lot of time between now and the 2008 elections and a lot of stuff happening in the world esp in the middle-east and the "Bumper Sticker" War on Terror.

I just feel that there is gonna be another chance for Bush to shine (esp for the Republicans) just as he did after 9/11 - I just hope it dont take another 9/11 style terror attack though.

What happened to the temporary visa idea (3 Years) of the 2004 election? Come forward, you get a work visa, then you go home.

Oh! that's right, the illegals rejected that! Damn! We better give'em amnesty since that's what they demand!

“if the consequences were not so tragic for the future of this country”

Did you even READ the damned bill Johnny Boy?

Or are you just spouting the same crap you have been on this issue since well before this bill was announced?

The American people saved themselves from the malfeasance of this President.

You oughta be damned thankful that the “Know Nothings” did what they did.

Go take your meds.

“The VERY crises you all have been screaming about for the last 4 years now will remain completely unchanged until at least 2009. The only people who won anything here were the Illegals.”

And, I might add, the Democrats. MNJohnnie, you said it well.

Excellent point - Bush has destroyed his credibility with the Harriet Myers fiasco and his Amnesty “that he says isn’t an Amnesty - or does he?”. These blunders are now threatening the war effort in Iraq by alienating his base. Your last phrase sums it up “How are we supposed to trust a man to conduct a war who refuses to protect our ports and borders?”.

The buzz around Washington today is that the proactive phase of the Bush presidency is over.

If true, that is a small price to pay in order to defeat the suicidal immigration bill. Country before Bush and party.

Bush could accidentally nuke Chicago and some would still support him.

He's our president! We're at war! Why are you against victory? Anyway, those Chicagoans were isolationists, nativists, racists, &c, &c ...

LOVE the way the 100%er "MY WAY NOW", who have never had an independent thought in their entire trailer trash lives around here accuse EVERYONE else of "Drinking the kool aid"? NO, as opposed the the Know Nothings, they actually bother to THINK about things rather then mindlessly scream their political dogmas louder when political reality doesn't conform to their Know Nothing dogmas.

Sucks to lose doesn't it? Don't worry you'll get over it. Maybe Jeb will run in 2012.

“Bush could accidentally nuke Chicago and some would still support him.I don’t know what it is, but it’s very, very strange.”

I think they work for Jorge in a tiny office at the White House.

It was a BIPARTISAN DEFEAT!!!

Bush was the biggest loser. He is the one who revived a bad bill after it was knocked down the first time. It was Bush who pushed this bad bill against the wishes of his own party, including most of the Reps in Congress. Although it was favored overwhelmingly by the Dems, it became Bush's bill and therefore he was the biggest loser -- plus the GOP, which has been split, and McCain who totally killed any slim chance he had to get the Rep nomination for Presiddent.

The thing is, Bush squandered a huge opportunity to put conservatism in action. I wouldn't say conservatives hate him, because I certainly don't. Frustration would probably be a better word. Remember, he had a Republican Congress for six years. Now there's no question that he has had some accomplishments, particularly on the WOT, judges, and pro-life issues. But...

-- Instead of tax cuts that have been offset by higher, more massive government spending and are going to expire anyway, Bush could have made the case to reform or abolish the entire system. He should have came out of the gate in 2001 and pushed for a low flat tax.

-- He has not used the bully pulpit effectively to counter-attack the lies and disinformation from the MSM/Democrats. This to me is very poor judgment on his part and this is probably issue #1 with conservatives. Why defend Bush when he won't defend himself.

-- Government spending. In 2000, candidate Bush promised "local control" of schools. Shortly thereafter, he signed Kennedy's No Child Left Behind Act. Medicare Part D is another boondoggle. I used to work for the program and you should hear the gut-wrenching stories from seniors on how the plan won't pay for certain medications or they're in the coverage gap or they're going to "sue" the government for lying to them.

-- Also in 2000, Bush promised "no nation building." But that's exactly what's happening in Iraq. Even Bush I was smart enough to stop just short of taking out Hussein. He knew what exactly would happen. Also on the WOT, Bush is fighting a political-correct, MSM-driven war. He is fighting this war like Lyndon Johnson when it needs a General Sherman.

-- Plus there's the North American Union thingy, and no it's not some kook consipracy theory.

Again, Bush squandered a huge opportunity here to really make sweeping changes that would have made him one of our greatest presidents. Instead, his presidency is mediocre along the lines of Eisenhower.

Our borders and ports are more protected then is openly talked about (and rightfully so). Think outed NSA Operations.

That you disagreed with the WH on the issue of a 30 year in the making problem is fine (so did I for the most part). But that is how our Gov't works. To suggest everyone within our political party needs to be some cookie-cutout is non-serious and silly.

Hell R. Reagan was a terrible POTUS/CINC then as well. Since he gave full and blanket amnesty to all illegals who were here prior to 1982 (along with those here from in 85 or 86)

Reality is we are at war with a terrorist element that has no set borders. That thrives and exists because the Middle East has remained in the dark ages. The world is simple too small and to easily dangerous any longer to ignore it, or to allow them to stay in the dark ages.

It must be dragged out of them for our own NS. GWB understood this reality. With that goes along with the fact that this process is going to be long, extremely difficult and frustrating at times...(which is why UBL and other mimics like him don't believe we have the stomach for such difficult tasks).
