President Bush's legacy

1.Facing opposition in Congress, Bush held town hall-style public meetings across the U.S. in 2001 to increase public support for his plan for a $1.35 trillion tax cut program — one of the largest tax cuts in U.S. history

2.Under the Bush Administration, unemployment peaked at a high of 6.2% in June 2003, and is currently at a low of 4.4%

3.The economy has remained strong, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average setting several record highs and the GDP experiencing healthy growth.

4.Bush increased funding for the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health in his first years of office, and created education programs to strengthen the grounding in science and mathematics for American high school students.

5.Republican efforts to pass the Medicare Act of 2003, which added prescription drug coverage to Medicare and created Health Savings Accounts, which would permit people to set aside a portion of their Medicare tax to build a "nest egg". The retired persons lobby group AARP worked with the Bush Administration on the program and gave their endorsement.

6.In 2006, Bush declared the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands a national monument, creating the largest marine reserve to date. It comprises 84 million acres and is home to 7,000 species of fish, birds and other marine animals, many of which are specific to only those islands.

7.On July 19, 2006, Bush used his veto power for the first time in his presidency to veto the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, a bill that would have reversed the Dickey Amendment, permitting federal money to be used for research where stem cells are derived from the destruction of an embryo.

I have yet to even address the Supreme Court Judges he appointed, or what he has done to protect this country from any attacks from Terrorist since Sept 11, 2001..and May I remind you the threat is not over, just look across the pond, to Glasgow , Scotland today.

The thing is, Bush squandered a huge opportunity to put conservatism in action. I wouldn't say conservatives hate him, because I certainly don't. Frustration would probably be a better word. Remember, he had a Republican Congress for six years. Now there's no question that he has had some accomplishments, particularly on the WOT, judges, and pro-life issues. But...

-- Instead of tax cuts that have been offset by higher, more massive government spending and are going to expire anyway, Bush could have made the case to reform or abolish the entire system. He should have came out of the gate in 2001 and pushed for a low flat tax.

-- He has not used the bully pulpit effectively to counter-attack the lies and disinformation from the MSM/Democrats. This to me is very poor judgment on his part and this is probably issue #1 with conservatives. Why defend Bush when he won't defend himself.

-- Government spending. In 2000, candidate Bush promised "local control" of schools. Shortly thereafter, he signed Kennedy's No Child Left Behind Act. Medicare Part D is another boondoggle. I used to work for the program and you should hear the gut-wrenching stories from seniors on how the plan won't pay for certain medications or they're in the coverage gap or they're going to "sue" the government for lying to them.

-- Also in 2000, Bush promised "no nation building." But that's exactly what's happening in Iraq. Even Bush I was smart enough to stop just short of taking out Hussein. He knew what exactly would happen. Also on the WOT, Bush is fighting a political-correct, MSM-driven war. He is fighting this war like Lyndon Johnson when it needs a General Sherman.

-- Plus there's the North American Union thingy, and no it's not some kook consipracy theory.

Again, Bush squandered a huge opportunity here to really make sweeping changes that would have made him one of our greatest presidents. Instead, his presidency is mediocre along the lines of Eisenhower.

And sadly you think that is a plus for him, first VETO, after he let so much crap cross his desk, including CFR, which you may have forgot he promised to VETO, either you are a paid hack or willingly deluded, in either case your statements are of no important to this thread.
