I watched DU during the debates over the bill....it’s was unbelievably quiet over there. Almost nothing posted about the bill in the first place to discuss. Hmmmmm

If the senate bill had passed, this country would have been finished as we know it. We were very fortunate to dodge this bullet. This issue transcends partisan politics. The future of the country was at stake.

Only 26% of the American people supported this bill. Who was trapping whom?

More Dems voted for the bill than Reps. And those voting for it included Hillary, Obama, Dodd , and Biden.

You wrote, “I’ve been saying this all along. This is a bad issue for Republicans no matter how you look at it.

Yet so many so-called conservatives are willing to cut off their noses to spite their faces.

Democrats came out smelling like roses, and Republicans came out looking like rabid immigrant haters.

I’m sorry, but I even told my own father that his anti-immigration activism is only hurting Republicans. I guess that is what happens when you don’t put God before your own instincts.

Now we are divided and defeated.”

You forgot to qualifiy the WE in the above. WE are divided and defeated only if WE are Demoncrats or Rinos. Which are you ?

I feel sorry for your dad that he was anti-immigration. I don’t know if I’ve ever met someone who is. Your dad is an extremely rare individual.

Yes, indeed. Bush has lost a lot of leadership power with this defeat, and is now too much of a lame duck to be paid too much attention to. (The best thing he can do for the country is win the iraq war and enforce existing immigration laws). I think that the GOP has a golden opportunity to win with the conservative position — if we can get rid of Martinez as RNC head.

Morris is unfathomably stupid.

Sadly there are quite a few (R)'s even more stupid. At least one on Pennsylvania Ave.

“No it wasn’t a trap.”

Once there were enough vots on our side to assure that the 60% required for closure would not be met, Dems and Republicans cast “No” votes to save their sorry @$$es. Had their votes been needed at that point to get the 60% for closure, their votes, in some of these cases, would have been “Yea”.

I don’t care if it was a trap or not. America got to see what politians wanted to sell this country out. Now we know, which is a good thing.

If they are ILLEGAL, they should not be able to vote.

But of course they do, so they are a political force since we refuse to enforce our electoral laws.

I agree and Bush signaled them he was more than willing to do anything to get the bill passed and personally don’t think he cared if it tanked the GOP.

We had Senators who were not afraid to stand up and be counted and a lot of voters who said NO! This was activism at its greatest in telling the Senators you work for us!

you are right, I think accept on one thing. The Iraq war is a loser. We cannot win it in 1/2 years. I would hasten to say we already won it. As the situation in Iraq is about as stable as it can get and Saddam is gone and so is his WMD program. We should declare a win and get out. What we need now is a president of some vision and leadership. Someone who see’s beyond the next election and can make structural changes particularly in the media. If the lib’s are bound and determined to take down then we should be bound and determined to take down the networks. The GOP should have the vision to put pressure on some of its money bags to support and create a couple more Rupert Murdoch’s. We need also to redefine what makes a conservative. The So cals are a good healthy strand. But, there needs to be other strands as well. It is becoming to much said that people are fiscal Conservatives and social moderates or even liberals. Most people are against repealing Roe Vs Wade and are not impressed by the religious right agendas. The religious right has been smeared and demonized beyond belief by the media. If we define social conservative as anti political correction and anti-illegal immigration and anti affirmative action then most people are social conservatives again. sometimes it is just changing the terrain that works.

It’s not a trap for a Republican president. Too bad we don’t have one at the moment.

My consolation is that Dick Morris has never been right about anything.

Uh?!?!

We can be SEEN to have "won it" by bringing at least half of the troops home while the Iraqis successfully handle al-Q. I believe this is the White House plan.
