As a matter of efficiency, its not odd for a national political operation to digest whole campaign structures at the statewide level. Fred Thompson seems to be doing this in Georgia.
Weve gotten word that Joel McElhannon, the Republican political consultant who helped put Casey Cagle in the lieutenant governors office and Jim Whitehead into a run-off for the 10th District congressional race, is being gobbled up by the Thompson campaign as some sort of Southern coordinator.
McElhannon confirmed the move, but referred all other questions to the campaign. Thompson has a fund-raiser here on Friday, one of his first events after the former Tennessee senators presumed entry into the race on Thursday.
Other Georgians in Thompsons camp include Tom Bell, CEO of Cousins Properties and a lifelong friend to Thompson; Steve Croy, a coastal developer who served as Cagles campaign treasurer; and lobbyist Raymon White, a native Tennessean who represents the National Rifle Association and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce at the state Capitol.
If you want your resume to look good, be the southern strategists for Thompson. If Thompson has any campaign at all, he should sweep the south.
>> McElhannon confirmed the move, but referred all other questions to the campaign.
Campaign? What campaign? “Presumed entry into the race”, what the heck does THAT mean?
Did I miss it? Did he announce? Or is this yet another one of those coy “soon but not quite yet” things?
You can only play this game so long, Fred. Time to stop cutting bait and fish (if you’re going to).
I believe its his plan to announce on Independence Day.

I was hoping for tomorrow, but your date is better. :)
You people need to get a life.
They just don’t understand REAL strategery. :p
Fred has already publicly stated that he would not announce on July 4th. He indicated the the 4th is America’s day.
Yeah, Fred will be sure to listen to you as he continues his weekly climb in the polls.
love the fortune cookie!
are your fingers crossed, hoping he won't? ; )
>> You people need to get a life.
Hmmm. With all that you know about me, why don’t you fill me in as to exactly what group of “you people” you’re talking about, and why exactly you have placed me as one of its members?
Oh boy. I’ve stirred up a nest of stinging Freddiebackers.
C’mon, y’all. Fred is on my short list too. I’m not wishing him ill, but this “campaign theatre” IS getting old. It’s also making me a tad bit suspicious as to the substance behind him.
And, yeah, I know “his people” could care less what I think.
But, last I looked, FR WAS an “opinion forum”, not an echo chamber.
He had perfectly legitimate reasons to delay, not to mention it is obviously spectacular strategy.
The man deserves as much time as he feels is necessary to get his campaign in place. The naysayers would love it if he rushed and then was disorganized.
They’ve stated it will be within the next couple weeks.
hey did i jump ugly with you? I don’t think so. as predictable as you think the fredheads are with their retorts, it is equally laughable how ready the nay-sayers are with their barbs about THEATRE and LAZINESS etc. Listen, i bet you wish you were as successful at something in your life, as fred has been without spending dime one. his strategy, whatever it is, appears to be working like a charm, so it is funny to hear those decrying the DELAYING theatrical tactics.
and you can opine at length, no one is denying you that opportunity, but prepare to hear laughter. we have read the “opinions” lots of places and those finding fault generally are those whose interests are least well served by a successful FDT candidacy : )
It’s not that Fred is entering late, but that the entire campaign season started so much earlier this time. Candidates never used to announce as early as they have for this election.
The announcement will be this month. Probably in the next couple of weeks but not directly on the 4th.
For obvious reasons.
