Former Virginia governor James S. Gilmore III underwent emergency eye surgery Friday to repair a partially detached retina, a condition that will force him to suspend campaigning in his long-shot bid for the White House, aides said yesterday.
Spokesman Dick Leggitt said Gilmore has canceled all of his appearances at the urging of his doctors, who sent him home but restricted his travel. The surgery was performed in Richmond after Gilmore reported seeing flashes in his right eye, Leggitt said.
Leggitt reported that the doctors have said Gilmore is likely to retain his sight, but he said it remains unclear what the long-term implications of the surgery will be for the campaign. "He is very anxious to get back to campaigning, but for the moment that is not possible," Leggitt said.
Gilmore, who served for four years as Virginia governor, has campaigned as the "true conservative" in the battle for the GOP presidential nomination. He has accused the front-runners of failing to adhere to conservative principles. But Gilmore has generated little attention and raised little money.

Perhaps he'll end up being the first to drop?
Gilmore was a candidate? LOL!
First I heard of it.
Richmond ping for Jim Gilmore.
Hope his vision will be ok. This would give him cover to drop out, if he were so inclined.
I’m really hoping McCain is the first to drop out. The media still thinks he is a serious candidate, even Fox News. LOL!
I wish him no ill will but I do wish he would get out.
With successful eye surgery, maybe he’ll be able to read the writing on the wall and drop out.
Hey it kept me off the trail a few years ago too, if you remember.
Hey it kept me off the trail a few years ago too, if you remember.
Who?
It would be a good time for him to say “you know, I had some time to think...”
But, I’m not sure his ego will allow that.
I really doubt he’ll withdraw. Like you said, his ego is pretty sizeable.
That is just an excuse for a non-starter to have an early exit. I had two partially-detached retinas - the “operation” is a laser and takes about 30 minutes per eye. I did them a month apart but if it is one eye, then do it in the morning, wear dark glasses the rest of the day and party on.
I hope Mr. Gilmore recovers fully....and he drops out and supports Fred Thompson when Fred announces.....
For some it involves a nasty operation called a vitrectomy and remaining in a face down posture for up to several weeks afterwards
He seriously should consider running for Senator Warner’s U.S. Senate seat instead in ‘08.
Here’s hoping for Governor Gilmore’s quick recovery, and that the time off allows him to realize that he should run for the U.S. Senate instead. If we run a RINO like Tom Davis for the Senate, Mark Warner will clean up in the Tidewater region, Southside and SW VA and the Democrats will hold both of VA’s Senate seats.
He takes off campaigning and nobody notices. LOL
Why isn’t McCain at 1% and this Gilmore guy in double digits?
