Fed up with war, some won't pay taxes

By JOHN CHRISTOFFERSEN, Associated Press Writer 43 minutes ago

When the United States invaded Iraq more than four years ago, war opponent David Gross asked his bosses for a radical pay cut, enough so he wouldn't have to pay taxes to support the war.

"I was having a hard time looking at myself in the mirror," Gross said. "I knew the bombs falling were in part paid with my tax dollars. I had to actually do something concrete to remove my complicity."

The San Francisco technical writer was making close to $100,000 a year. He didn't know exactly how big of a pay cut he would need to fall below the federal tax threshold, but later figured out he would have to make less than minimum wage.

In any event, his employer turned him down and he quit. Gross, 38, now works on a contract basis, and last year he refused to pay self-employment taxes.

War tax resistance, popularized by Henry David Thoreau in the 19th century and by singer Joan Baez and others during the Vietnam War, is gaining renewed interest among peace activists upset over the Iraq war.

"Clearly this year we definitely had more people calling, sending e-mails about how they decided to start resisting," said Ruth Benn, coordinator of the National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee in New York.

Based on the committee's mailing list and reports from numerous groups it works with around the country, Benn estimates 8,000 to 10,000 Americans refuse to pay some or all of their federal taxes over war objections.

Commie ‘RATS are always looking for some excuse to NOT pay taxes (their “fair share”). They ALWAYS want someone else to do it. I guess the war against the Islamofascists is as good an excuse as any.

I would bet that 90% of the people that want to avoid taxes out of spite for the war in Iraq are already among the 50% of Americans that pay little or no income tax. Perhaps they can be coaxed into protesting by giving up their “earned” income credit!

Good for them, now let’s have the IRS Storm Troopers break down their doors, shoot to kill if they resist and sell their property to recoop unpaid taxes.

If your convicted of not paying taxes. That means you cant vote right?

That's OK - if you're a liberal, an illegal alien will be appointed (through motor voter) to vote in your place.

Or a corpse, a cartoon, a dog, or a cat.

Since The Democrat State of San Francisco is no longer a part of the United States why are they paying taxes anyway and why are we sending tax dollars there to keep them up?

...And then, to top it off, let's his name and circumstances get splashed all over the national news.

Fine, go to jail then. We don't care. We could do with fewer liberals out and about.

“Fine, more leftist socialists in jail for tax evasion. Screw these people.”

Hope it becomes a mass movement for them. More jobs for the prison industry.

And the bright side is, a lot of them would then get what they secretly want. It just will not be from the IRS, it will be from their cellmate.

I think he should be allowed to not pay ant taxes related to the war, if I also can choose not pay any taxes related to entitlement programs.

Great point. I agree. And why’s he so upset that his tax money is spent on bombs that will kill terrorists that could’ve potentially attacked this country again? There are bigger wastes of tax money, such as the things you named. I’d add public school funding to that list.

Of course, this budding Einstein took the money he might have paid in federal taxes and sent them to aid Iraqis, right?

Right?

That would be an odd meeting—you’d have representatives of both the far left and far right present.

It'd be a regular Kook-A-Palooza!

You all do know that there is an IRS tip line where you can report someone like this leftist, and then also collect a portion of the taxes as your reward? Maybe FR should file that claim and use the money to start off one of the quarterly Freep-A-Thons.

This guy is unbelievable. There are a lot of things that the government spends money on that I don’t agree with. Yet I’m still compelled to pay taxes. He thinks he has some “moral high ground” I’m sure in that he opposes the war.

Why is it ok to say things like global warming or tax resistance to war funding are moral issues, but things like preserving marriage or abortion issues are not to be viewed as moral issues by the criteria set by liberals?

Hey, Gross, the Self-employment tax you refuse to pay goes for Social Security, that sacred cow you libs all love.

Of course, we conservatives all know that all taxes paid to the Feds are fungible, BUT, since most libs are into self-delusion, Mr. Gross can tell himself his particular taxes only go to welfare or The Teacher’s Union, or somesuch liberal claptrap. Maybe that would make him feel better.

Hopefully, being spotlighted in this article will bring the IRS down on his a$$.

Seems fair to me. Everyone can pay taxes to support only the programs they want. I figure this concept would cut my tax bill by about 90%.
