Too bad for the locals. They’re about to lose another patch of earth to a UN World Heritage site.

Six people who were arrested during a protest to save the remains of a Bronze Age footpath have pleaded not guilty to aggravated trespass.

They were all detained at a meeting of Herefordshire Council after councillors declined to discuss the future of the so-called Rotherwas Ribbon.
Footpath protesters deny trespass
The monument, a series of deliberately fire-cracked stones, was found during excavation work for a new road.

The six appeared at Hereford Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Martin Wyness, 49, of Harold Street, Hereford; Jacqueline Tonge, 46, of Bute Avenue, Hereford; David Phelps, 54, also of Bute Avenue; Jane Knight, 55, of Withy Trees, Burrington, Ludlow; Matthew Hatter, 31, of Park Street, Hereford, and Charles Arthur, 30, of The Post Office, Stoke Prior, near Leominster, Herefordshire, were all granted unconditional bail.

The defendants spoke only to confirm their names, addresses and their pleas during a short hearing.

They are due to return to the same court on 5 October, alongside two other defendants who pleaded not guilty to aggravated trespass at an earlier hearing.
