Hey, I’m not kidding here, that first fish caught that day we were fishing was a madtom.
I won’t name names, but a little girl caught it, and it fell off the hook before I waded there to take it off (and I was glad, it was scary looking, like a cross between a catfish and God knows what else).
Most folks don’t know that madtoms used to be common on high mountain Tennessee streams, but some of them are on the endangered and threatened species list now, and they are uncommon. I am not an expert on anything, let alone madtoms. But I know what that was, and I have, in the past, written about them, and their recovery process.
This was the first one I saw on a hook. The first one I saw PERIOD. That was why I bragged about it so much.
Hope that little girl remembers it, it was cool. When I was a kid her age, I used to play with Horned Toads, they were all over our back porch (we lived in Texas then). Now they are on the endangered species list, and a rare thing. Kids today will not have the experiences I had, and I am thankful I had them.
Now — that thing you caught is called a MINNOW. Nuff said (grin).
Trust me, she remembers..... she even knows its name without prompting. I am also glad it fell off the hook. I had no idea how we were going to get it off!
I didn’t know horned toads were on the endangered species list! My brother had one for a pet when I was a girl (in Ohio). I remember taking it out in the yard and watching it eat ants.
Now, as to my “minnow”.... at least it was a trout minnow!
The Old Ones return!
Don’t forget about closing the borders...
creepers.....is that from the Dunwitch Horror?
Yeah, but at least the version you posted has the proper credit left intact :-)
