No longer content adhering to the adage, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," Microsoft on Thursday announced that it will extend its Xbox 360 warranty coverage to three years from date of purchase. The warranty covers any consumer who experiences the general system failure indicated by three flashing red lights, more commonly referred to as the "red ring of death." Both shipping and repair costs will be covered.

The new warranty will represent a $1 billion pre-tax charge on Microsoft's earnings for the year's final quarter. This marks a notable setback for the company's Entertainment & Devices division, who reported a $315 million operating loss in the third quarter.

“Microsoft, has not revealed how many of its machines have suffered the problem, but said the number was “bigger than we are comfortable with.””

Makes you wonder what number they would be comfortable with.

“He” has traditionally been considered the generic single person pronoun and I, personally (as a woman), think that women are being petty and stupid when they object to it. Using “he” is far better than “it” and is far more grammatically correct than “they”. It all comes down to this - do we really have to change all the -man extensions too?? I mean, I know our society has embraced this politically correct manner of speaking, but there’s a point where it must stop. To me, replacing “he” with “they” is akin to replacing mankind with humankind, which still brings up questions in my head (should it be “personkind”? Or maybe “hupersonkind”? Are you laughing yet?!)

...the XBOX delivers quite a rush on a 52' screen with the stereo turned up.

DOH!!! This should be 52" - inches!!!! LOL!!! Sorry 'bout that.

It's a JVC. Nice picture. I didn't pay anywhere near the price listed 18 months ago.

LOL! I am now. : )

I didn't really think twice about it. I'm not familiar with the source of the quote so I made the best reference I could recall for it.

My random slaughter of the English language knows no boundaries...Caffeine deprivation at 5:00AM is a savage thing!

ROFL!! As one married to a “large-hooted” womming for almost 40 years, I can tell you that they (the big hoots) are overrated. And I bet she would agree.

Love that tag line. Might steal it for use elsewhere some day.

Red ring of death here, and no, it’s not from a bad lunch.

I remembered reading your post, and I got lucky in searching for it. Happened today with my son and I. The three red rings indicating hardware failure. I remember getting the extended plan from Best Buy, but I will have to find the paperwork or contact Best Buy to verify. I hope I don’t have to contact Microsoft. Oh well.

Hey Jon, I'm up now...but this is because of a bad lunch! I know, TMI, however you don't need the paperwork. Best Buy should have your name recorded in their system. Simply bring the hardware, they can look you up. You should be ok.

I remember asking them those details and that was one of them for the "replacement" warantee.

Hey, maybe if it's a problem with the HD (you lost the data anyways then) you can work out an upgrade to the Elite? What's the difference after the price drop? $50? Just a thought.
