Spitzer-Bruno Relations Reach New Low
NY Sun ^ | July 6, 2007 | JACOB GERSHMAN

The state Senate majority leader, Joseph Bruno, yesterday accused Governor Spitzer of committing "political espionage," alleging that Mr. Spitzer directed state police to monitor his movements during his recent trips to New York City.

The allegations, which were denied by Mr. Spitzer and the New York State Police, plunged relations between the state's top Republican and the Democratic governor to a new low in an ongoing feud fueled by a power struggle over control of the Senate.

Mr. Bruno said police logs detailing Mr. Bruno's schedule during trips to New York City that were provided to the Spitzer administration and passed on to reporters show that the governor took extraordinary measures to keep track of his whereabouts in an effort to catch him improperly using state-financed transportation.

"This type of dangerous abuse of power is despicable, possibly illegal and undermines our democratic form of government," Mr. Bruno said in a statement. He said he asked Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and the Albany County district attorney, David Soares, to "convene grand juries to assess the criminal liability of the governor for his abuse of the power of his office and the misuse of the state police for political espionage."

Mr. Bruno's allegations were reported by the New York Post yesterday.

Spitzer administration officials denied there was any surveillance of Mr. Bruno, saying they asked for the logs in response to a request made by the Times Union of Albany for the itineraries of Messrs. Spitzer, Bruno, and other state leaders on days the officials traveled on aircraft provided by the state.

Because Mr. Bruno's office refuses to disclose the senator's schedule, the Spitzer administration requested the itineraries from the police, a spokesman for the governor, Darren Dopp, said. State police officials said they responded to the request by assembling a "synopsis"...

Looks like the Sun doesn't think too highly of Mr. Spitzer.

Spitzer is scum ~ always been his basic problem. When he was AG he made a big deal of going after charities and non-profits whose fundraising he didn't like ~ he was highly selective.

Never saw him target ACLU, Fund for Children, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and so forth ~ guy never laid a hand on any Democrat or Liberal group.

He also played another and more insidious political game with the charities. If the fund raising company a charity hired was known to have any Republican or Conservative party affiliations, he'd go after the fun raising company. If the company had Democrat or Liberal party affilaitions, he'd go after the charity.

Never turn your back on this Spitzer guy. Hope the Senate Majority leader has some luck in getting him busted, but he's probably going to have to call in the federales or the Mob.

Let ‘em take each other out. It will save us from dirtying our own hands.

I don’t think there is a limit to how low Spitzer can go.

It's because Spitzer may be less slimy than Bruno.

It remains to be seen if that is actually the case, but Bruno's not exactly a choirboy.

... Mr. Spitzer directed state police to monitor his movements during his recent trips to New York City...one of the left's most despicable tactics - turning the mechanisms of government against those they should be serving - 900 confidential FBI files available to the White House would be only the beginning if Hillery ever got her hands on the Presidency - very scary.......

Fat chance of Dem hack Andrew Cuomo doing anything about it, if anything he'll side with Spitzer ... but like you said, what fun :)

Don’t blame me. I voted for Faso.

I didn't even vote Faso on either Repub or Conservative lines, but went straight Libertarian ... didn't even know who the Libertarian candidates were, but just voted them as a 'protest' against NY State's dysfunctional government.

A pox on BOTH major parties (as well as the Conservative party, who ran the same candidates as the Repubs) ... there is something terribly wrong in OZ when even the NYS Liberal party wasn't on the ballot because they couldn't get enough signatures to float a candidate!

well sure - Spitzer appointed him - they claim to buds.
But Cuomo has turned over a new leaf. He’s trying to shed that whole Hud scandal stink. He’s the real deal now! ethical and all!

The evidence against Spitzer is strong. Cuomo will have to wiggle real hard to find a way not to burn him somehow.
