Why was Hunter so sure he could run on this issue months before the bill was killed?

You like to provoke, don't you.
Hunter's been working towards protecting our borders for years...
This is nothing new for him.....
..but of course, you already know this.

I watched Thursday’s interview with Hunter on New Hampshire Public Radio (it was replayed on CSPAN).
Hunter is a 2 issue candidate: the border, and the war.
I agree with him on the border issue, but totally disagree with continuing the war in Iraq and was horrified by his analysis of it.
“Occupation is a good thing.” - This is a direct quote from Hunter during the interview.
Besides these 2 issues, he has nothing else. People here praise him as being one of the most conservative, and before this interview I didn’t know too much about him.
As I said, I was horrified.

Just goes to show the extent of his leadership. He's had the foresight to see this coming and work on a fence long before it was thrust into the national consciousness by the Bush/Kennedy amnesty bill. If you're looking for an honest man who loves America to lead the nation, you've found him.

Hunter is a 2 issue candidate: the border, and the war.
Leave aside the fact that those are the two major issues that face America today. Hunter's also tackling the growing Chinese threat, he's pro-life, he's not going to advance the gay agenda, and basically checks every box that conservatives want checked.
As Michael Reagan said, "If conservatives were to make a list of everything they wanted, Duncan Hunter is that man." This coming from someone who, I gather, knew Ronald Reagan pretty well.

I saw the interview too. He called it “good” but also said it was a difficult and necessary venture to try to create a democracy, putting it into context with previous efforts in Germany and Japan.
I thought his most interesting thoughts were that war has been the norm, and not the exception, throughout our history.

Well, being as those are the two #1 issues concerning the American people today, he does address them adroitly, but I have yet to hear Duncan Hunter mumble, tap dance or use platitudes of any kind when asked any question on any issue. He shows his stuff straight and to the point on each of them. Quality cannot be faked, and Duncan Hunter is the real deal. His timing is perfect, for the country needs Duncan Hunter, and it needs him now.

Calling it what it is rather than sugar coat it...what would you call it if not occupation?
Without occupation, you cannot have victory over evil.

I watched that same interview and came away very impressed. And he is right on all issues pertaining to conservatism.
Who in the world have you found more conservative than Duncan Hunter?
To: Old_Mil
Anyone who believes Hunter to be a two issue candidate is seriously misinformed. It’s to be expected with the way media drives politics these days.

You claim to be horrified by Mr. Hunter's analysis of the war in Iraq, but if you were really paying attention to the interview, you should have seen that he actually has a plan and a vision for removing our troops from Iraq. Rather than the usual flag-waving and posturing from other candidates, he has a clear vision for how to stand up the Iraqi military so that we can leave. He said that the occupation was a good thing at this time, but he also said that he looks forward to a day when we will leave. No other Republican has such a clear vision for "winning the peace" in Iraq and then leaving. Ron Paul's vision is to surrender and retreat as the America-haters have always said we should do. The other candidates want to "stay and win" but have offer no clues what that means or how to get there. Mr. Hunter's analysis showed the best grasp of the situation.
The notion that Mr. Hunter is a two-issue candidate is equally silly. Even in that interview, he talked about his views on the war, the border, and trade. Mr. Hunter's stance on trade is clearly the third of the big issues that clearly distinguish him from other candidates.
Beyond those issues, Mr. Hunter's other writings and speeches make clear that he's strong on the whole range of conservative issues. He's a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. He's pro-life. He's generally in favor of smaller government and lower taxes.
