Effort afoot to bring John Edwards to Eureka (California)

An online contest could help local supporters of presidential candidate John Edwards bring their man to Humboldt County.

While an Edwards visit to this northern reach of California is already possible, it's not locked in stone, said a press release from local Democratic volunteer Shane Brinton.

So an effort is under way for the county to compete in an online “Demand and Be Heard” contest. The city that casts the most votes at the Web site www.eventful.com by the July 18 deadline will attract the former senator.

”We might actually have the chance to hear a presidential candidate talk about issues that are important to us, right here in Humboldt,” said Brinton. “To have any presidential candidate -- especially one like John Edwards, who is speaking directly to the needs and concerns of rural America -- come to Humboldt County, would be an amazing opportunity for our community.”

Eureka City Councilman Chris Kerrigan is assisting Brinton in the chase for Edwards.

”I've been very impressed with John Edwards' candidacy, so when I found out about the contest, I was immediately ready to promote it,” said Kerrigan. “Edwards' plans to lift people out of poverty and strengthen the middle class are what our country and our county need right now. A lot of people here are interested in what he has to say.”

Eureka holds second place in the contest, ahead of many major cities and hundreds of other smaller cities and towns nationwide, Brinton said.

Anybody with an e-mail address can vote in the contest by visiting www.HumboldtForEdwards.org.

Offer him a lot of money and he will then tell you all about the “Two America’s.”

“Edwards' plans to lift people out of poverty....

Interestingly play on words here.

How does "Edwards" actually plan to lift people out of poverty

A crowbar, really long lever, pulleys system, hydraulics ?

I'm sure he meant "Edwards" has a plan, just like Jon Carrys "I have a plan"

That area is deep in liberal land. Tree huggers abound. They sit around the giant redwoods eating their tofu and granola while singing Kubaya.

And, since it's Humboldt County, probably a healthy dose of this year's tetrahydrocannabinol crop. :)

I drove out from here in Arkansas to NorCal about a month ago. I came through Eureka. Ate at the Samoa Cookhouse, then drove to Arcata. Now let me tellya, Arcata is hippie GROUND ZERO! Stopped on the square and had lunch. Marijuana smoke was pretty heavy-right DOWNTOWN!
BTW, real nice folks in NorCal-had a wonderful time and met some wonderful people.

I grew up in Eureka.  No credible Presidential Campaign would have a rally there.

I just can’t support John Edwards. He has trial lawyers and hairdressers in his back pocket. Two shady groups there...
