When Tommy Thompson speaks, his listeners hear folksy tales of his upbringing in a Wisconsin town that was so small people ended up chatting for half an hour even when they dialed a wrong number.
On a more serious note, Thompson explains that growing up there gave him the work ethic that enabled him to become a state legislator, governor of Wisconsin and and the U.S. secretary of health and human services.
The Republican told about 50 people in Fort Dodge Saturday that hed apply that same workaholic attitude to the presidency.
Thompson vowed that if he becomes president, hell work to end the Iraq war, make the country energy independent, press for a cancer cure and improve the countrys image abroad through medical diplomacy.

Here is an excerpt which deserves close analysis:
“On a purely political note, Thompson said he doesnt think the eventual Republican nominee will carry Ohio next year. That, he said, makes it crucial for the Republicans to win Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.”
That (along with Michigan) is SO true. The GOP needs to have either a nominee or a Vice Presidential candidate from the northern tier states. Some of the states which supported Bush twice can’t be relied upon this time.
This sounds like he’s already running. Come on Fred, do the paperwork, will ya? The time is here to start separating the rockstars from the groupies and weeding out the GOP also rans.
Wrong Thompson.
Minnesota hasn’t gone Republican since 1968, Wisconsin since 1984. If the war is still a major factor in 2008 then I don’t see that changing.
Don’t I feel like an A$$hole
OH is blue for the foreseeable future thanks to Taft and Ney. Gov Blondie’s approval ratings are at Bush levels. MI could go Red in 2008.
If Tommy Thompson ran for President in 2000, he would have won both the primary and general elections. He was a reformer as opposed to W who just coasted by. However by accepting the job at HHS, Tommy T. is tainted by the Bush Administration.
Michigan was within about 50,000 votes in 04. We could go red but it’s going to take a unique candidate. Personally I’m pulling for Hunter.
Carrying Minnesota is wishful thinking. It hasn’t voted GOP in a Presidential election since Nixon carried it in 1972, and that by an underwhelming 6% against the radical McGovern. Wisconsin is a possibility, but voter fraud must be clamped down on in Milwaukee. Ditto Michigan with Detroit. We should focus heavily on keeping OH in our column, and I don’t think that’s a total lost cause, yet.
But as I wrote months ago, simply putting somebody from that region in the VP slot is no guarantee of a win there.
MN voted for Humphrey in ‘68, Nixon in ‘72.
Guess there’s no point in us expendable voters bothering to vote this time around. Yep, that’s going to win lots of elections.
Bush lost Wisconsin by less than 1% in both campaigns. He lost Minnesota by 2% in 2000 and 3% in 2004.
“simply putting somebody from that region in the VP slot is no guarantee of a win there.”
Not by itself it won’t, but it can swing a few votes. I’m expecting that Fred Thompson will be the nominee, and he’ll be credible in that region. But he will still need more support than Bush got, and someone with local appeal there could provide the extra votes to put him over the top.
There are some Bush states (Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia) which I don’t think the GOP will hold in 2008, and there is no margin to spare. So Fred Thompson (or whoever the GOP nominee is) will have to pick off a couple of Gore/Kerry states.
Tommy Thompson is a chipper. A former board member of VeriChip, Inc. The people who want to infect us with slavechips!
No thank you!
I’m inclined to say one step at a time, and don’t count your vice presidents until you know who your president is.
But I do think that Thompson & Thompson bumper stickers might be subject to a bit of humor.
“But I do think that Thompson & Thompson bumper stickers might be subject to a bit of humor.”
True, but it could be a strong ticket. Unfortunately, I’ve heard that Tommy Thompson dislikes Fred and has no interest in being Vice President. I hope he may change his mind.
???
If we lose those above 4 states, there's no way on earth we'll win the election. We're not going to be swapping any of them for Rust Belt/Great Lakes states. We either carry all or none. Same result. BTW, WV has already swung to us pretty solidly now as a GOP Presidential state, and I would be absolutely amazed to see it vote for Hillary or Obama. But if we lose it, the same above scenario applies.
Now that I’ve thought it over, I think I jumped the gun on Virginia. It’s not a lost cause. But it’s very much in danger of falling. So are Nevada and Arizona.
Sounds like a democrat, and I guess the word, "victory," isn't in his vocabulary.
