WASHINGTON -- Congressional investigators set up a bogus company with only a postal box and within a month obtained a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that allowed them to buy enough radioactive material for a small "dirty bomb."

Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., who will ask the NRC about the incident at a Senate hearing Thursday, said the sting operation raises concerns about terrorists obtaining such material just as easily.

Nobody at the NRC checked whether the company was legitimate and an agency official even helped the investigators fill out the application form, Coleman said in an interview Wednesday.

Wasn’t that the lyrics to a Beatles song, “I gut a feeling, a feeling deep inside......”

This is not even remotely surprising. We use nuclear leveling devices where I work, and we are required to jump through lots of paper-work hoops to maintain these systems by the NRC.

Never had a audit, Never had a phone call. We simply fill the paper work when required and send the step fees and all is well.

If Bush and Congress think their numbers are low now, wait 'til something bad happens because of this type of policy...

How many of those NRC welfare clowns (on our tax dollars) got fired and fined for maleficence?

But don't worry. Kalifornia has long ago closed the so-called gun show loophole. Everybody should feel much safer since I had my criminal background checked about half a dozen times last year at a cost to me of only about $300.

Not so surprisingly, each check indicated that I had never been convicted of a felony. I just hope I can maintain this excellent record through July and resist the urge to knock over a bank or a 7-11.

It’s so wonderful to know that Jorge protects America from dirty bombs about as well as he protects our southern border from terrorists.

Thing is when GAO does a sting they are legit with documents that alter their ID. Anyone can form a company in America that deals with dangerous materials, the GAO did. But it was a sting.

I've seen this in cases when they attempt to penetrate federal facilities. They have documents that you can't tell are fake. Of course if some malicious person can do what the legitimate persons do, then commit a crime, what can you do?

"He said that such licenses now will require visits to the company or in some cases company officials will have to come to NRC offices."

Plenty of companies (not necessarily dealing in nuclear material, just making a point) are run by an individual, a phone and a fax? So now the GAO can set up a front CEO or company location.

What can you say about something like this?

We've got the FBI, NSA, DHS, and every other TLA out there telling us that we've got to let them wiretap phones any time they want. They have to have full access to all financial transactions in the country that don't involve illegal aliens.  They force us to remove our shoes before getting on a plane. They've got to have full access to every email and IM sent through the country. They want everything, and more because, after all, if you don't have anything to hide, why should you mind?

Then you see an article like this.

Kinda puts it all into perspective.

As I recall, through the blur of the 60’s and 70’s, it could very well have been.
