Special Report Can a Methodist Be U.S. Surgeon General? By Mark Tooley Published 7/12/2007 12:08:06 AM Today Senate begins hearings on the nomination of Dr. James Holsinger as U.S. Surgeon General. Unusually, several U.S. senators already oppose him, including presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Christopher Dodd. Another presidential candidate, former Sen. John Edwards, also opposes Holsinger. The New York Times has denounced his views as "abnormal."
Their reasons are based exclusively on Holsinger's activities in the United Methodist Church. The 7.9 million member denomination, like nearly all churches, officially disapproves of homosexual practice. Homosexual groups, like the Human Rights Campaign, have denounced Holsinger as "unworthy" to be "America's doctor" because of his "anti-gay ideology."
Interestingly Clinton and Edwards are also United Methodists. (For that matter, so are President Bush and Vice President Cheney.) But Holsinger's unacceptability to the homosexual groups and to some Democrats is based on his current role in the denomination's top court and on a church study committee about homosexuality on which he served 16 years ago.

That said watch the story, if we can't appoint a Methodist to political office that is real trouble for our country.
The Bible itself contains quite a lot of “anti-gay ideology.”
This is just amazing.
What are we coming to?
Not sure which UMC he attends but many congregations are rather open and willing to make that left turn.
Talk about your anal microscope exams though.....
By the way, Mark Tooley is a very good reporter of religious news. He focuses on the mainstream protestant denominations, particularly Methodists, and the battle within them over issues like this.

Im a Lutheran, but I attend the UMC church up the street as there is no Lutheran Church here. Its always Darfur this and Nicaraguan that..so I know what you mean about lefties in this church.
The convoluted reasoning that is political correctness comes full circle. Homosexuals used to be thought of as abnormal. They have lobbied persistently and are now supposed to be viewed as normal. Therefore, someone who believes that it is abnormal for a man to insert his penis into the anus of another man is himself deemed "abnormal" by the NY Times, that arbiter of all things.
If that attitude ever becomes widely accepted in America, then who gives a cr*p about what happens to her.
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
"Abominable," that rings a bell, let's see...
Leviticus 18:22
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
Oh, tsk.
Defining deviancy down. The world turned upside down. Insert your own catchphrase but I feel like the homosexual agenda blossomed very quickly in my lifetime. I’m still adjusting to the fact that United Way chapters won’t include the Boy Scouts because they don’t allow homosexual scoutmasters.

What? United Methodists don’t disapprove of homosexuality. The ones I see have rainbow stickers on their welcome signs in support of ... “diversity.”
If Jocelynn “we must teach our children to masturbate” Elders could be surgeon general, ANYONE can be!
Be careful! Your lack of tolerance for the necessary intolerance required to enforce tolerance could draw the attention of Hillary.
I’d rather have a Methodist Surgeon General than a Moslem Surgeon General.
To put it mildly.
A Protestant can't be Surgeon General? Since when?
America was founded as a Protestant country. Hell, Catholics who attempted to settle in the colonies were turned back (mid 18th century).
And Methodism has been an integral part of America since that same time.
What madness to even say such a thing.
But we know what the stone faced queer "activists" (er, molesters) are like: psychotically obsessed with forcing their sickness on Americans.
Just hard to believe that a major Presidential candidate like Hillary can so openly pursue a radical agenda and expect, and have a good chance of, winning.
i.e., Where are we going and what are we doing in this handbasket?
