Tancredo's stark tack on reform
Denver Post ^ | 07/12/2007 | By Anne C. Mulkern

Washington - Not all babies born in the United States would automatically become citizens and legal immigration would slow to a crawl under broad immigration-reform legislation unveiled Wednesday by Rep. Tom Tancredo.

The Littleton Republican, known for his stalwart anti-immigration views, said a rewrite of immigration laws is still needed. Saying he needs to push the envelope, Tancredo came up with a bill that takes a starkly different tack from the version that just died in the Senate.

"What I don't want to happen is that everyone walks away from the table," Tancredo said. "My hope is that by doing this, I will keep the whole thing front and center."

Conceding that he doesn't expect U.S. House leadership to allow a vote on his legislation, Tancredo said he's setting "a goal post" for how the nation should handle immigration.

Tancredo's legislation covers topics as varied as placing limits on family-based immigration, imprisoning employers of illegal immigrants and penalizing states that help illegal immigrants attend state-funded schools.

In introducing his legislation, Tancredo, who is running for his party's presidential nomination, decried the use of Spanish by government agencies and private businesses.

And he accused President Bush of failing to enforce the law.

"While we often hear administration officials saying that they simply can't enforce our laws when the truth is that they haven't even tried, it's not that they can't enforce these laws, it's that they don't want to," Tancredo said.

On Taxes:
“A growing chorus of economists and experts argue, and I agree, that the current income tax system is complex and unfair and should be replaced by a flat tax or national sales tax. Simplifying the process would dramatically reduce the costs of compliance, make American companies more competitive, and put billions back into the economy by encouraging investment.”
-Tom Tancredo … Tancredo also spoke at the FairTax rally Tuesday, May 15, 2007 where he declared his support for the FairTax

Sounds like a reasonable bill to me. He should be submitting its provisions as amendments to all the House DHS and Justice appropriation bills and force the Dems to vote against them.

Newspaper doublespeak used to combat Tancredo's thoughtcrime. Can't have facts getting in the way of propaganda.

If Tancredo's bill reduces legal immigration by 2/3, most people would say that is anti legal immigration.

If Tancredo's bill limits the number of work visas to 5000, most people would say that is anti legal immigration.

If all Americans who joined together to fight the bastardized pro-illegal shamnesty bill would stand behind this patriot, he would really have a shot at the presidency.

No, he also has mentioned cutting back on LEGAL immigration. This was during one of the debates when they were discussing immigration. I heard it from him myself, no press intervention needed there.

In fact, that’s when any support I had for Tancredo pretty much fell off.

I believe he wants to cut back by 2/3 until we get a better handle on how many are here, legal and illegal. A good case could be made. If he gets the part of the bill thru dealing with illegals and the anchor babies I will be happy.

That would KILL us in the healthcare business. The reason we’re barely scraping by for nurses in the shortage is that we are importing from abroad. The US schools aren’t putting out enough of them.

“nurses in the shortage”
We are allowing ill educated, illiterate in two languages, people in. Remember that “chain migration” (bringing in relatives) is legal immigration. Skilled immigrants need to be given priority.
Side note: Where I work we use temporary workers thru an agency. Who do you think picks up English fastest? Guys straight off the boat from Africa or guys from south of the border (Mexican, Honduran, what ever)?

That’s what he is talking about. To see where we are at. Take a break. Our system is out of control and nobody has a handle on any of it. It is amazing that some people just welcome the kaos and also the allotmewnts as set up by Teddy K & Co. As far as I am concerned we need to change the 1965 bill back to what is was before then.

Don’t get cute. He said legal immigration should be suspended until we got illegal immigration under control. That is not an unreasonable or irrational stance.

Tom Tancredo doesn't have any co-sponsors for his legislation. Like I've been fond of saying, "common sense is in short supply in Washington." His idea of immigration reform is exactly what our country needs. I back it wholeheartedly.

His position on a time out for legal immigration is based on the recommendations of the bipartsan U.S. Commission on Immigration in its final report.
