China has suspended imports from several key US meat suppliers after months of international scrutiny over the safety of Chinese food and drugs.
Officials said they had found salmonella and growth-enhancers in several imported US chicken products.
Last year, 51 deaths in Panama were blamed on medicine tainted with Chinese chemicals and, this year, some US pets died from food with Chinese gluten.
China this week also executed a top official for approving unsafe drugs.
'Exceptional'
China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said salmonella had been found in products from the largest US meat processor, Tyson Foods.

Chicken feet supplied by Sanderson Farms had growth enhancers and anti-parasite drugs, it said.
Among the suspended US operators were Cargill Meat Solutions, AJC International and Triumph Foods.
Most of the firms have not yet commented, but a Cargill spokesman denied the claims.
Beijing has vowed to improve its quality control by streamlining its fractured monitoring system.
This week it also executed the former head of the State Food and Drug Administration, Zheng Xiaoyu, for taking bribes in approving unsafe drugs.
Quality control head Li Yuanping recently insisted tainted Chinese food exports were rare.
"All of them are exceptional cases. There is no such thing as zero risk. China-made products should not be labelled as substandard just because of a few bad producers."
Apart from pet food and cough syrup, international concern has also been raised over Chinese toothpaste, tyres, jewellery, seafood and toys.

Overshadowed by the trans-Atlantic trade clash over steel, the U.S. “chicken war” with Moscow, say Washington insiders, has already done real damage. Washington was stunned last month when officials of the Russian Agriculture Ministry suddenly banned the import of nozhki Busha — chicken legs that are a popular morsel in Russians’ diet. They are named for the former president George Bush, who saw drumsticks improving economic ties with Moscow in the early 1990s. Russia now consumes two-thirds of U.S. chicken exports, a $600 million market. Even so, it might have been routine business when Russian officials charged that the frozen chickens were riddled with salmonella. But imagine who got hopping mad? Senator Joe Biden, normally a free trader, but also a Democratic senator from Delaware, a nest of chicken farmers. He happens to be chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A frantic Bush administration quickly discovered that Moscow had been blindsided by what U.S. officials see as a corrupt operation involving two Russian ministries and influential local poultry producers. Top-level parleys eventually restored the trade, with Russia sending inspectors to American poultry plants. But the timing of the monthlong wrangle was politically fatal to administration hopes, led by the U.S. trade representative, Robert Zoellick, of getting the Senate to repeal the Jackson-Vanick amendment, a Cold War-era law that crippled Russia’s trading potential.
The little Chinese people could use some growth enhancer and worm medicine. Now they will have to go back to eating bear bladders and dear penis.
Sooooo, they don’t want to import QUALITY U.S. products?
Fine. Ban EVERYTHING made in China, from A to Z.
The resulting market demand will mean more jobs for Americans, and as an added benefit, Mexicans can stay home (or go home) as the illegal job market dries up.
And as a P.S. to Beijing, inform them that Taiwan will be receiving “most favored nation” trading status because they “DON’T BUILD JUNK!”
Screw those ChiComs and the paper mache dragon they rode in on.
unfortunately, the corruption in Mexico has forced many manufacturers there to China...
Treating the free market as if it were a diplomatic tit-for-tat. They are on the wrong side of the balance of trade for that to have any impact. Read the WSJ, China, you have a brand problem. Made in China will be as reviled as Made in Japan was in the 50’s. Japan fixed their quality problem; will you?

Chinese officials were outraged when they found out that the American products contained actual meat.
Good- now maybe the demand will go down a little here, and we can pay just a tad less for our meat. The beef growers are being driven out of business with rules and regs every day of the week. Soon there won’t be enough beef,period.
I think China’s primary meat is pork.
