Divine says immigration reform challenging
Chattanooga Times Free Press ^ | Friday, July 13, 2007 | By Michael Davis, Staff Writer

Robert Divine, former chief counsel of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, told the Rotary Club of Chattanooga Thursday that there needs to be a multifaceted approach to addressing the immigration issue in America.

Mr. Divine served part of his time with the agency as acting director and also as acting deputy director. He said that people will find a way to come to the United States since there is a demand for work here and a supply of workers south of the border.

"We do not have the will and the resources, in my opinion, to put toward a border … that can on its own prevent (illegal immigration) from happening," he said at the Chattanooga Convention Center.

Mr. Divine was appointed by President Bush as chief counsel of the immigration services and served in that capacity in Washington, D.C., from July 2004 until November 2006.

Mr. Divine, who now works in Chattanooga and leads the immigration group for law firm Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC, said it is essential to have mechanisms for employment verification and allowances for some people to stay in America.

"I've never heard anybody who's in charge of immigration enforcement ever say that they thought that they could deport 10 million people," he said.

The U.S. Senate last month prevented an immigration reform bill from moving ahead in the chamber.

Many opponents of the bill rejected its path to citizenship for illegal immigrants currently in the United States.

Mr. Divine said that the debate over amnesty for illegal immigrants is really "a pretext for nativism and protectionism."

"It's not really about 'the law must be the law,' " he said.

After hearing the talk, Bill Chapin, of Lookout Mountain, Ga., said Mr. Divine's "discussion showed the complexity of the issue."

"There is no single answer for such an emotional and complicated situation," he said.

Sure you do Jorge, or you wouldn’t get all worked up when someone questions your motives.

Then why are you posting on a Conservative web site?

Disruption?

They can build the American dream in their own country.

Jorge bush appointing corrupt people like this clown is part of the problem. He never tried, nor has jorge tried, to control and/or enforce boarder security.

You see that little twelve year old girl raped and killed by someone that should not have been in this country and you see a piece of dirt attorney spewing this bilge, just flat p--- me off.

You cannot buy a “Song of the South” DVD in the USA - you have to order it from overseas.

Brer Rabbit and the Tarbaby was my first introduction to “reverse psychology” when I was a child. Now, of course, our kids get Grief Counseling and Ritalin when endeavoring to think for themselves.

institute a high tariff on all money transfers to Mexico,

No decent people are going to agree to place a "tariff" on money transfers from people trying help their impoverished relatives in other countries.

Being kind I'll say half of that money is paid under the table. Probably more . Is it decent that these people escape taxation while sucking dry our schools and hospitals?

I find the opposition on these boards to be a form of entertainment.

I LOVE it when people challenge me. They are usually so inarticulate and lacking in debate skills its like a turkey shoot.

Your post above is the perfect example.

It won't be too long before we'll all see the adverse effects of the newly enacted laws on a booming Arizona economy.

I didn't think this country was built entirely on the making of a buck...we might as well bring back slavery too... if it's good for the economy...personally I'd rather metaphorically "pick my own damn lettuce" than foster a sub-class of people fueled by a never-ending supply of cheap labor from south of the border...

I don't have to "hide" ANYTHING from you bozo.

I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK about my positions on ANYTHING.

Respectfully, you aren't exactly raising the level of discourse.

So now we know.

I’ve been told by wiser folks than myself, not to feed the trolls.

So be it.

Sorry Jorge,
I thought that telling me you don’t care what I think and calling me a bozo was an example of someone getting upset. I guess if I’m just inarticulate and lacking in debate skills, it’s still fun for you. I enjoy finding a liberal lurking on FR and trying to expose him.

Thanks Travis...

We cant go to sleep at the wheel..

Kennedy and his little La Raza friends think we have had our little rebellion and triumph and now will lie back down on the porch like good little ignorant tax-payers..

But thats not going to happen and must not...

We have proven to them but more importantly to ourselves that we the people can speak up for ourselves and our sovreign country and be heard...

Racists? The Mexicans are mostly of white spanish extraction...

Anti-Immigrant/Immigration? I’m an immigrant and so are millions of the the other American citizens who objedt to illegal aliens being treated like a priliged class in a country not their own..

Nativist/Nativism? Merely means the natives, the people born in this great country love the country of their birth...

The enemies of our country (domestic and foreign) are taking our virtues and attempting to make them seem petty and small and nasty..

But their logs still await them to be plucked out whenever they stop fooling with what they perceive to be a tooth-pick in us...

Sure I am.

I clarifying the level of honesty required or that anybody has the right to challenge on these boards.

Nobody knows anybody else (for the most part) on these boards the idea that I would have to "hide" anything from that poster is absurd. And he was a bozo for even suggesting such thing.

So I AM "raising" the level of discourse to level of mutual respect that is owed to each poster on FR. OK?

I wasn't upset. I was laughing as I pounded out my response. Who's keeping track of this stuff anyway?
