Former Rep. Bob Livingston Urges Vitter to Stay Strong
Fox News ^

NEW ORLEANS — Robert Livingston, the former Louisiana congressman who resigned in the late 1990s after admitting to extramarital affairs, said his situation is not at all like U.S. Sen. David Vitter's, and he urged Vitter not to resign.

Monday, Vitter, R-La., acknowledged a past "serious sin" involving an escort service that federal prosecutors claim was a prostitution ring. Since then, he has stayed out of the public eye, as several Republicans, including prominent members of the state GOP, have offered support and critics have accused the family values politician of hypocrisy.

Livingston, in an interview with WWL TV, said he had urged the fellow Republican "to pick himself up and charge forward. We need him."

Livingston was in line to be House speaker when he resigned during hearings to impeach President Clinton in 1998, after admitting to affairs. Hustler publisher Larry Flynt, who investigated Livingston, took credit for his resignation.

Hustler said it also discovered Vitter's number in phone records released by Deborah Jeane Palfrey, the woman prosecutors allege ran a Washington, D.C., prostitution ring, and told him, hours before Vitter released his apology. Palfrey maintains her escort service was a legitimate business that offered sexual fantasies.

Livingston said his leadership role makes his situation different from that of Vitter, who succeeded him in the House and is the state's junior senator.

"I think David Vitter should stay right where he is," he told the station in an interview Friday. Efforts to reach Livingston Saturday were not successful.

U.S. Rep. Bobby Jindal, R-La., who is running for governor, offered more tepid support. He said he and his wife were disappointed by Vitter's actions but are keeping the Vitter family in their prayers.

While Livingston is no daisy, I think I agree that Vitter shouldn't resign just yet. Why give the Dems a seat? Bobby Jindal will likely win in 6 months, so let's keep this seat with the GOP. At least that's my gut feeling right now.

It is apparent that Vitter unlike Livingston Broke the Law. I am not all that sure we want criminals, Democrat or Republican in the US Senate.

BTW-At my residence in Louisiana, my Governor is Kathleen Blanco, my mayor is Ray Nagin, my Congressman William Jefferson, my Senators Mary Landrieu and David Vitter.

Each is a criminal or simply incompetent.

What law did Vitter break?

As I understand it Prostitution is only legal in two areas in Washington D.C. the first being Capitol Hill and the second the White House.

I do not think the D.C. Madam's facilities were located at either place.

Just curious, why is Vitter being singled out when you know there are others. Also, didn’t they find Bill Clinton’s phone number? If I were Vitter; I wouldn’t say squat to anyone; until others were brought out(both sides of the fence)and Clinton brought out. Hey Doug, here’s one to research. I understand he and Hil and not happy about his rapes being brought up; but he thinks it will go away. Rape never goes away, Mr. and Mrs. Clinton.

When William Jefferson, D-LA resigns, then we can talk about Vitter.

Jefferson will have to resign in the next few months and Nagin will run for that seat and win.

Vitter should stay right where he is. We need as many Senators opposed to the North American Union as we can get.

A US Attorney from DC likes nothing better to have the head of a US Senator mounted on his on his wall. And I have little doubt that the DC Madam will sing about Vitter and others once the Feds get going with their RICO prosecution of the DC Madam.

He isn’t being “singled” out, Palfrey’s in this mess too, and there is no reason she should be “singled” out either, if they prosecute her, they should prosecute the johns too, Republican and Democrat and Independent alike.

I meant they weren’t saying anything about any others they have on the list. I have read it on the internet; but can’t remember where. Will look it up and see if I can find it. I have seen it atleast twice.
