We knew it was bad, but an article in the Wall Street Journal today opens, "The downturn in the newspaper industry is getting worse."
The paper's Emily Steel quotes Ed Atorino, an analyst with financial broker Benchmark Co., saying, "Right now, you've got a perfect storm." He predicts total ad revenue will fall 4.3% this year, one of the steepest in history.

It's from "Underdog".... Marc Levin.
“Along with the buggy whip industry.”
I understand that is just as big today as it was in 1890. People still use buggies — you can see buggy cabs in NYC for instance. Relatively few people had buggies in the 1860, compared to the percentage now owning cars, and there were so much fewer people in the US in 1890 that the total number of buggies used today really is not much less than those in 1890.
They are mainly used for recreation, professional sports (sulkie-racing) or the nostalgia industry, but there are still plenty of buggies around.
So there still *is* a buggy-whip industry.
Nonsense.
Over a year ago, I advertised an auto for sale in the Marxist Sacramento Bee. The add ran 2 (two) weeks, and I got 1 (one) bona fide call of interest. Then, I listed in Craig's list, got an avalanche of calls, and sold the car within days.
Car and house advertising will follow the cost/benefit pressure. It's that simple.
The "news" papers will obediently follow their rigid, America-hating dogma to the end, blaming everyone and everything but their Marxist selves.
Here in the Sheeples Republic of FloriDUH, we solved the fish wrapping problem by releasing enormous schools of armed and rangerous brueaucrats. Now, to keep a fish, you need a ‘Fisherman’s lawyer’ - literally.
For those unable to afford such a professional, there is a ruler sold under that name, which has a summary of the rules for actually keeping a fish.
Since you can’t, practically speaking, keep a fish - you don’t need a newspaper.
The Miami Herald is a fraction of the size it was years ago, and is steadily shrinking. The same goes for most of the other collectivist rags in FloriDUH.
Is the old Miami News still around? I doubt that it is, just wondering.
It has been gone for decades. The Miami Herald has shrunk noticably.
;-)
Alas, that collectivist rag is still being printed, though its future contribution to the South Florida area looks better and better because its’ financial prospects seem to progressing from bad to worse.
It'd be too damn bad if the NY Slimes went down the gutter. Wait, I mean further down the gutter.
Glad to hear that the "Herald" is having a hard time
