Obama: Stop Enabling The President
WMAQ ^ | July 20, 2007 | ap

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama told New Hampshire voters Friday that President George W. Bush grossly misunderstands his role as commander in chief.

"When President Bush says, 'I just want to give the commanders what they want, listen to the generals,' he doesn't understand how we work here in America. Civilians control the military and we are supposed to set the mission for the generals and then the generals should carry out the mission," Obama said at an outdoor town hall meeting.

"The military has done all we asked. We just asked the wrong things of them. That's not their fault. That's the president's fault. And we've got to stop enabling him to do it."

He said, though, that negotiations might be pointless with some terrorists.

"There are only about 20,000 -- let's say -- activist extremists. I don't have the precise number, but it's in that range. Most intelligence estimates are there are 10,000 to 30,000 people who are actively involved in extremist movements," said Obama, a longtime critic of the war in Iraq. "We are not going to be able to negotiate with them. We have to hunt them down and take them out."

Earlier, in Hampton, Obama told voters the change in direction needed to end the war in Iraq begins with them.

"Change in America never starts from the top down. It starts from the bottom up," the first-term senator from Illinois told a crowd at an elementary school.

"The country is ready for change. It's hungry for change. If we put our shoulder against the wheel, we can move our country in a better direction. That's how we brought an end to segregation. ... That's how we brought an end to the Vietnam war, and that's how we'll bring an end to the war in Iraq."

He also said he opposed any move to withdraw from Afghanistan, saying Al-Qaida is gathering there and is a "tremendous threat." "We haven't handled Afghanistan well because we've been distracted," Obama said.

The latest University of New Hampshire poll for CNN and WMUR-TV of likely Democratic primary voters, released this week, gave Obama 25 percent to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's 33 percent. It's a gap that has remained nearly constant in state polls.

Republicans said Obama doesn't have enough experience.

"So far, Barack Obama has demonstrated inexperience and inconsistency on the important issues facing America, including fighting the war on terror and funding our nation's troops," said Amber Wilkerson, a Republican National Committee spokeswoman.

General Obama will win this war, silly! Just elect him and stop enabling America’s self-destruction.

A great military mind is indeed a terrible thing to waste. They’ll talk to the terrorists and make everything a whole lot better.

Pinky-swear!

Obama is the single least qualified candidate for the Presidency that I have seen in my lifetime. I wish he could be their candidate because any major GOP candidate could squish him like a gnat in the general election.

What was he, a state senator for awhile and has about six months in the Senate with no accomplishments before he decides to run for President? Even Kerry served more than 20 years with an unimpressive Senate record before he ran.

That Obama POS doesn't understand how the constitution and the federal government works. The president is the duly elected commander-in-chief of the country, elected by the people. Once the people make their choice, the president carries out his duties as dictated by the constitution and as a representative of the will of the people.

Is Obama even an American? Does he understand that he is in America and the president commands the military and not the people? That would be so chaotic and idiotic to run government and a war through polls. Barack, IDIOT! He's not even qualified to run the local hot dog stand.

This man is a total freaking moron. Civilians can't even control their own brats, much less the military.

The "other" travesty is that this idiot has a chance of being elected because that fat Oprah says, "He be da man."

Excuse me, Mr. Osama-Obama - if you want to be POTUS, you had better study up a little bit. The mission IS set by the President, but is carried out by the Generals who are THERE on the SCENE and who have the TRAINING, and KNOWLEDGE that most American's don't have. We LISTEN to what the Generals say because they know what they NEED to carry out the MISSION that was given TO them.

Mr. Obama - say you work for a mechanic. Your job is to fix a car. Your mission assigned you is to diagnose and fix the car. You are given a preliminary set of tools to diagnose the problem. When you get into the repair, you find additional problems - your boss in the shop says - no, you have to finish up with what you have and get out (even if the problem isn't fixed, or the problem is now worse because the engine is taken apart).... Or does your boss count on your training, experience, and knowledge to tell him what you need to fix it (additional parts, labor, time)?

Obama - just keep opening your mouth - because every time you do, you prove to the American people that you ARE NOT qualified to be POTUS...

This and his assertion that it is not worth being at war to prevent Genocide (what about the previous DemocRAT admin - didn't THEY go to war to prevent supposed genocide? Oh - that doesn't count.

He says we have to hunt them down and take them out. To all but a small number of common-sense liberals, saying we have to hunt them down and take them out constitutes all their national defense plans.

Hey,, PSSTT... Hussein Obama..listen up: We are a Democratic Republic. Not a mob rule democracy. We elect leaders to make decisions. When they make the wrong decision we vote them out.

If they can't make decisions, we elect them as Senators.

Obama has to be pretty damn dumb if he doesn’t understand what Bush said. Of course Bush selected the mission, now he listens to the generals on how to carry it out.
