The 2 1/2 -minute video of Fred D. Thompson that played at the National Right to Life Committee's annual meeting last month dazzled the group...
In the three weeks that followed, Thompson and his not-yet-official presidential campaign did their best to undo that goodwill...
But instead of viewing him with suspicion, leading social conservatives are rallying around Thompson, citing his eight-year Senate record as proof of his commitment to fight abortion. They dismiss the lobbying report as an effort to drive a wedge between leaders of their cause and a politician who could be their best hope for putting a kindred soul in the White House...
Campaign aides concede that their responses to the abortion question have been poor. Thompson spokeswoman Burson Snyder said her candidate still "does not recall" doing work for the abortion rights group but concedes the records show he did some "pretty insignificant" consulting.
"These organizations get what's going on here," Snyder said. "They've seen his voting record. They've seen he was endorsed by the National Right to Life group. When the rubber met the road, they know where he was."
The fact that the revelations -- and the campaign's sometimes sloppy response to them -- have not caused more long-term problems underscores the conservative community's desperation for a Republican candidate who is both true to its cause and positioned to win the presidency...
One Republican observer... said the delay in the campaign's announcement is intended to allow Thompson time to work the kinks out before officially declaring his candidacy.
"This was a loosely affiliated group of supporters and friends of Senator Thompson for a long time," the adviser said. "[He] is laying the groundwork for what, should he decide to get in, will be an organized and well-oiled machine."

Hillary’s minions are probably being given the evil eye for not succeeding with their plan to mow down Fred. She and Hugo Chavez have things in common.

WARNING: If you want to join, be aware that this ping list is EXTREMELY active.
Pissant is deeply saddened.
I don’t think it is so much that Fred is bulletproof but that these abortion jabs have absolutely no meaningful substance whatsoever......they are whipping Fred with a wet noodle....its quite a pathetic sight to see.
The writer of this was trying to wring whatever negatives they could get. If the information didn’t drive away his supporters, then the campaign was inept and making mistakes.
Fred has said his life was going in one direction, and you can’t change it all on a dime.
I haven’t changed my mind about him at all, I’m with Fred.
Not really. I'd say the ones that worked hardest to undo the goodwill were Hillary, her friends, the liberal media and Mitt Romney.
I don't believe Fred is a social liberal. Period. End of story. W-r-o-n-g angle to attack him from.
Nor do I believe committed abortionists would be working so hard to derail him by claiming he is, if he was one! They certainly haven't behaved this way towards Rudy who IS for abortion. They haven't treated Romney this way either.
Freds response to the Washington Post was, “next time you better bring krytonite.”
Hillary, the dems and the media think that Conservatives/Republicans are slack-jawed, Bible thumping, inbred, low IQ lemmings that do whatever Rush or some televangelist tell us to. Are they going to be surprised!
LA TImes: bad, liars, spinners
Wash Post: Smart, accurate, fair
ROFL. I get my billy’s mixed up
I don’t know why the dog is laughing or that you would be saddened. If you know pass it on I would like to be in on the joke. I don’t get the funny part of “Fred was dishonest and lied” but we don’t care. It doesn’t matter who went after him or why. He is running (?) for POTUS and he and everyone else that chooses to do so will be attacked. What he did 16 years ago doesn’t matter, but the fact that he was dishonest about it, does. I Know he said he didn’t remember, but a Spokesman said,”he absolutely didn’t” and Fred could have changed that any moment afterwards, but didn’t. It has always been about what “Fred has said” but if we can’t believe him in this instance I think everyone agrees is a small matter, how can we do so for the rest?
Oh, come on. 20 hours of work, of which only 3.3 hours was actual lobbying, 16 years ago? A successful attorney, at the minimum, would have done over 40,000 hours of work for hundreds of clients over that time period, and he’s supposed remember this marginal group?
What Fred said is that he didn’t lobby Sunnunu, although he couldn’t rule out possibly doing some work for the group, wh ich turns out to be exactly the truth.
It was his spokesman who issued the blanket denial. All that proves is that Team Thompson is not quite ready to officially join the race. And guess what - they haven’t joined it. They are still organizing and hiring.
Hopefully, they will learn an important lesson from this in that everyone has to be on the same chapter and verse before anyone speaks to the MSM.
Thompson would probably do himself some good politically to let that spokesman go, though.
The GOP has a crush on Thompson
“...the fact that he was dishonest about it...”
The drumbeat of this whole “affair” is pretty pathetic. Story upon story of the same thing they had previously written... just hoping that it sticks around long enough to became fact.
But I don’t know what’s more ridiculous, the maintstream media’s assault, or the image of Hillary’s camp reading these threads, laughing, and high-fiving each other.
