I especially agree with the guy holding the sign that says “No Racism In Laguna Beach” because opposition to illegal immigration is the exact opposite of racism.

Ever since the passage of the 13th amendment there has been a certain class of employer in the US who would do anything to circumvent the 13th amendment and its follow-ons. At first they just signed African American former slaves to long term labor contracts that said that they could not leave for better wages or working conditions. Unfortunately for the employers the Supreme Court declared this to be unconstitutional. Unfortunately the courts have not yet applied this ruling to workers here on H1b or L1 visas.

Next they just tried brutalizing African American workers into submission through what were called “lynchings”. This went on until the 1950s when photography and mass communications made it difficult and welfare programs established a floor under which wages could not sink, or else said African American workers would simply sit on their proverbials and collect welfare.

Next the employers turned to workers, mostly from Latin America, who could be encouraged to enter the US illegally and work under conditions and for wages that that no American could live on but which were still better than the workers could expect in their home countries. This was the best thing that had happened to this certain class of employer since that annoying 13th amendent. Here at last was a class of workers whose rights no employer was bound to respect. If they got too “uppity”, just have them deported.

This went on for a few decades until 1986 when an illegal alien amnesty was passed. Most of the workers who had come here illegally declared that they had come here 7 years previously and were granted legal status and became a legal part of the US work force. Unfortunately the 1986 amnesty bill contained no provisions for sealing the borders against future illegal immigration and the provisions to penalize employers were, as written by the Congress, were declared essentially null and void by the courts.

Sponsors of the late “Immigration Reform” measure were sure not to do anything to impede the flow of illegal workers after passage of their measure. Unfortunately for employers the people rose up and our esteemed Congress came to fear for their blankity-blank jobs. Good for them.

The point remains. A certain class of employer still longs for a class of worker whose rights no employer is bound to respect. These are the true racists in the immigration debate.

If enlightened Americans really wanted to do something for the people of México and other Latin American counties they would encourage them to create opportunities withing their own countries for entrepreneurs and investors and to break down the old order of peones y patrones and make Latin America a true equal partner in the global economy.

As for the employers who just can’t make it without the economic advantage of disenfranchised labor, screw ‘em. There are some jobs America does not need.

Two Department of Justice personnel were there - they said they have been assigned to "mediate all Minuteman rallies.'

Did they show any ID?

Doesn't sound legal to me.

I especially like the sign that says “If your business can not survive without illegals, then your business needs to fail”. Ouch!

Thank you and everyone for being there. Pics are nice too.

Great pics. The DOJ presence is ominous. Jorge would love to have proof of vigilante activities by the Minutemen. He was either too dumb or lying when he called them vigilante.

The day labor site brings back a couple memories for me.

October, 1967: On my way home from high school, a friend driving by screeched to stop and asked if I was 18 and if I wanted a job. I said yes to both questions and he told me to jump in the car. As we drove to his house, then mine, he told me the personal manager from a large local printing factory had been driving through the area searching for workers.

Within an hour I was working my first real job at the end of an automated box folding line. I seemed destined for quick dismissal that first night for being too slow. It was all such a maze to me. By midway through the second night the complaints were that I was too fast. From there I moved up rapidly in what would become a five year career. My hiring was one way employers found workers in those days. Personnel managers actually went out looking daily if necessary for new workers. I've not seen a single such instance for a very long while.

The second memory the day labor site brings to mind is of great importance. It is very important for one reason, corruption.

While in high school there were two local day labor sites, and they were very legal. They exist to this day. They were Manpower Services and Kelly Services. Many of my classmates went there daily until they found work. Some worked in the fields, some in canning facilities, other found jobs doing clerical work.

I learned over a decade ago of the upstart unofficial day labor sites operating without licenses in Fresno, California. They could crop up on one corner one day, and be a few blocks away the next. The bosses hired only illegal aliens, and for good reason. They could be easily swindled with no avenue of recourse.

One day I met one of these bosses. We had a long conversation. At times it was terse, but for the most part respectful. He admitted to me that the farmers he took his laborers to were paying the legal wage, plus an extra fee for him for rounding-up the laborers.

What neither the farmers or laborers realized was that he was paying the illegal aliens much less than the prevailing minimum wage. The guy was pocketing money he told the workers was for taxes, transportation, and anything else he could dream up.

The bosses have never been prosecuted for operating a business without a license, tax evasion or never depositing taxes withheld, nor will they ever be prosecuted so long as they keep padding the pockets of corrupt government officials.

Such practices could never happen with the legitimate used by my high school classmates.

Great pics. What the hell is DOJ doing there? Probably protecting the rights of people who have no damn business being in this country rather than US citizens who are being invaded daily. Just like Congress catering and pandering to illegal aliens with the failed immigration fiasco last month, then are again pandering to illegals by claiming to protect them from the evil Minutemen. These are our hard earned tax dollars used against us again and again.

Not sure what that was all about

I suppose it was NOT to find and detain Illegals amongst the
counter-protestors.

That would be too simple.

I'm not raggin' on a couple of DOJ grunts sent on "a fool's errand"
by their superiors.

I suspect their superiors (that support the Dubya-Kennedy-Brownback
approach) sent them to help counter protestors from doing anything
that would put them in a bad light.
Sort of like Public Relations Agents for Illegals.
