Taliban threatens to kill 23 Korean hostages

The Taliban has threatened to kill 23 South Korean hostages held in Afghanistan, as security forces surround the building where they are being held captive.

The 23 hostages were abducted on Thursday

Afghan and US troops have arrived at the complex in the southern province of Ghazni where officials believe the South Koreans - Christian evangelists - are being held, an Afghan Defence Ministry spokesman said.

The soldiers have cordoned off the area and are awaiting orders, but so far there had not been any engagement, he added.

The Taliban has responded aggressively to the action.

"If there's any military action against us, we'll kill the hostages," Taliban spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi said.

Mr Ahmadi confirmed that the extremist movement was in negotiations with the government over the fate of the hostages.

The Koreans, who are from an evangelical Christian group that was on an aid mission to Afghanistan, were abducted from a bus travelling from Kandahar to Kabul on Thursday.

The Taliban want to swap the 23 men and women for jailed fighters, and are also demanding that South Korean forces leave Afghanistan.

A team of hostage negotiators arrived in Kabul from Seoul earlier today.

The police chief of Ghazni province, Alishah Ahmadzai, said talks were being held with the Taliban through tribal elders and religious leaders.

"I hope we get good results," he said.

you two missed or share in the “superior” part.....EOM

P.S. on second thought, you are both also welcome to go over there and openly proselytize/stick it in their moozlime faces (as I also said way above, but of course he didn’t respond to THAT part) and see what it gets you.

I ‘spose it’s allright to sing dinner music to the lion that eats you, but probably worthwhile only if you’ve made some headway first....

Korea should turn their Tiger division loose on those taliban murderers. Those boys aren’t exactly known for going easy on the enemies who they capture. I bet old OSB would be found within a week if the Koreans got hold of someone who knows where he’s holed up.

IIRC the Tigers had a kill ratio of about 25 to 1 against the North Vietnamese regulars.

“A false religion spawned by a false prophet.” ......... Believed by those who were fully indoctinated since birth and forbidden to learn of others. The Koreans are truly dedicated and brave to have entered their territory to preach the gospel. However, the Taliban will think nothing of beheading them for shock value.

“...hope these young people come out of it ok...”

I surely do too.....and I wish that they’d had 3 or 4 ROKs on the bus with them

aside....I spent a year in ROK too.....Camp Casey, and we had lots of KATUSAs with us, and the real ROKS were along the actual Z (We and KATUSAs as well)......the KATUSAs (kids of rich and well-connected Koreans) always beat feet away from the ROKs, too, because the ROKs were as likely as not to treat the KATUSAs like a chicken tossed to the audience at an Alice Cooper concert....:)

I can’t imagine why a group of Korean Christians (esp most of them being women) would even be in Afghanistan.

There are a lot of Christian students, even in the United States, who feel it is their mission to evangelize in Islamic countries. Arguments of older and wiser persons that maybe this type of activity would be suicidal have no effect on these young people.

Brilliant synopsis!

Are you sure an Independent run for POTUS is out of the question for you?

According to Joel Rosenberg (author of Epicenter), South Korea is #2 in the world for sending out Christian missionaries (the USA is #1). The Koreans apparently concentrate on Muslim countries in Asia - a stalwart and hazardous undertaking.

Afghanistan has a budding Christian community which both the government and the Taleban are trying to wipe out. Before September 11, 2001, there were only 17 known Christians in the entire country. Today, there is an estimated 10,000, dozens of baptisms occur every week, and people are snatching up Bibles and other Christian literature as quickly as it can make it into the country.

Little wonder the Taleban is frightened.

you can do or say no wrong,...

That's not true for alas, back in '67 I thought I was wrong on an issue, but I was wrong in my thinking.

Many years ago the unit I was in had the privilege of cross training with a platoon of ROK soldiers.Their training was something that can not be described.I did not serve in combat with them and I will take your word on their competence.I would be very worried if I had to fight against them. They are some of the most feared soldiers in the world.I think the taliban opened a can of worms on this one.I would not be surprised if there is a plan already in order to send a unit there. Many will meet allah, and the ones that don’t will wish they had.Just my opinion.

A false religion spawned by a false "prophet."

Don't give them an out via a false prophet.

They are evil and their personal promotion of evil is what drives them.
