Sushi, Diet Soda Latest Health Targets
NY Sun ^ | July 24, 2007 | BRADLEY HOPE

Two foods once thought healthy — sushi and diet soda — pose grave health threats, according to two studies released yesterday.

The city's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is launching a campaign against sushi, encouraging women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have children in the near future to stop eating raw fish and cut down on their intake of even cooked fish with high levels of mercury. The campaign was prompted by a citywide survey that showed that women of childbearing age in New York had three times the level of mercury in their blood stream as did women in the same age group nationwide.

Meanwhile, a study published online in Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association, by nine researchers affiliated with Harvard, Tufts, Boston University, and the federal government's National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute from a center at Boston University found that people who drank one or more soft drinks a day, including diet soda, were 48% more likely to have conditions that lead to heart disease. The thousands of participants of the study had a 31% increased likelihood of becoming obese, a 25% increased risk of high blood sugar, and a higher risk for low levels of "good" cholesterol, according to an article in the Los Angeles Times.

The soda industry and the seafood industry lashed out at the studies.

"This study doesn't prove any link between soft drinks and increased risk of heart disease. Its assertions defy the existing body of scientific evidence, as well as common sense," the president of the American Beverage Association, Susan Neely, said of the soda study. "It is scientifically implausible to suggest that diet soft drinks — a beverage that is 99 percent water — cause weight gain or elevated blood pressure."

"It is extremely..."

Raw pork gives you Trichinosis. While raw fish does have the possibility of carrying Anisakis, it’s much less common here. Besides, sushi has to have fish.

Sure, when they start raising pigs in bathtubs.

I don't do raw fish. But beef is another matter. We used to eat raw hamburger meat on crackers.

I am waiting for the study that shows that food can lead to obesity and that intaking any proteins or carbohydrates is injurious to health. I think starvation can solve a lot of health and social problems and may even aid in the control of excesive population./s

The first study discusses mercury, not pathogens, so why single out sushi?

The second says that some unhealthy people drink soda. Not that soda causes ill health.

How stupid do you have to be to become a reporter?

California Rolls are very good as well, and contain cooked crab.

Snicker, snicker. That's not cooked crab. That's faux-crab made out of fish paste. Look THAT up.

I thought it was commonly known for at least ten years that diet sodas were really bad for you, mostly because of the Aspartame and other fake chemical sweeteners. They taste awful anyway, if you want a soda drink regular and if you’re on a diet drink water or ice tea. The same with the sushi, it’s been known and recommended forever that pregnant women avoid certain fish that may be high in mercury, its not necessarily sushi but certain fish.

I think they recycle these same studies every so often and act like they’ve made some big new discovery.

Why not a delicious hunk of raw turkey?

They actually do serve chicken sashimi in Japan. They sear the outside of a chicken breast, slice it thin and you dip it in ponzu, which is basically soy sauce and lemon juice. I've had it and it was good. I was told by a sushi chef here in the states that the chicken here is not of high enough quality for this to be safe and I tend to believe him. Unlike the Chinese, the Japanese are practically obsessed with quality and this extends to their food.

"It is scientifically implausible to suggest that diet soft drinks — a beverage that is 99 percent water — cause weight gain or elevated blood pressure."

Maybe it's that 2 cups of sugar per 2 Liter jug of regular pop that has something to do with it, and all that artificial sweetener in diet pop.
Then there is the simple observation that people who guzzle a gallon or more of pop every day tend to be obese.

What ever it is, the Marxist "regulate everything you do" police will set you straight. Like guns, grocery stores should provide the names of people who buy more than 10 large jugs of pop a week and put them on a list- for public safety..../s

"How about raw pork sushi for kicks?"

There are places that serve that, and raw chicken, beef, venison, just about any raw meat you can think of.

"Sure, when they start raising pigs in bathtubs.

They pretty much do. You've never seen a super barn I take it. The pigs live in a pen that is basically a rubber coated grate, little strw, and are showers 3-4 times a day. they are cleaner than most people, never see sunshine, nor is there a fly in the entire place. Even the workers have to walk through a shower and put on a clean one piece work coverall before entering entering the barn.

You can get a variety of worms from raw fish, including tapeworms and other parasites. They are supposed to examine the fish on a lightbox as they prepare sushi. I sure wouldn’t eat raw fish, or raw anything. You just never know, and all it takes is one little hunk of bad meat to get sick enough to die, or have an ichy anus, or worse, a hungry 20 foot tape worm. (it will keep you thin though)
