Clinton to be on Letterman for anniversary

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, one of the leading Democratic presidential contenders, will be a guest on CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman” on Aug. 30th to help observe the 14th anniversary of the broadcast, her campaign said Thursday.

The appearance will be Clinton’s seventh on the show, one of the most popular late-night programs on the air and a coveted venue for national political figures.

Clinton first appeared on the “Late Show” on Feb. 14, 1994, when Letterman’s mother, Dorothy, interviewed her briefly from the Winter Olympic Games in Norway during an ice hockey game. She asked the then first lady whether she could do anything about the speed limits in Connecticut that had bedeviled her son with tickets.

Her first in-person time on the show with Letterman at the Ed Sullivan Theater was Jan. 12, 2000, following weeks of on-air entreaties by Letterman. While on the show, she discussed her intention to run for the Senate from New York.

Shows such as Letterman’s or NBC’s “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” or Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” are eagerly sought by some politicians because they present a more unconventional forum for national exposure.

Sen. John McCain, appearing on Letterman’s show at the end of February, jumped the gun on his own planned kick-off for a presidential run by announcing on the show that he would be a candidate.

Former New York Mayor and Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani made his 28th appearance on Letterman’s show in May. Clinton rival Barack Obama has appeared on Letterman’s and Leno’s shows.

Clinton’s husband, former President Clinton, appeared on Letterman on the first anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

I have no interest in the failed weatherman from Indianapolis. He’s not funny, he’s rude to guests, and his petulant behavior after NBC made the right choice with Leno still irritates me.

Dave should put her on with Lindsay Lohan and make it a theme show. Hillary could mentor Lohan on breaking the law and not taking the fall. How to use males for your own purpose and how dispose of someone no longer useful to you. The finer points would be how to pick a Webb Hubbell to do your time for your crime. And how to dispose of members of the posse when they could present P R problems, and why you cannot go wrong with disposing of a body in D C parks like Fort Marcy.

Good idea...putting someone unfunny and annoying on your anniversary show.

(I liked Letterman once upon a time. Haven’t seen his show in forever.)

I’m a little cloudy on equal time rules...
does “equal time” apply for primaries ?
what are “equal time” exceptions ?

The last time I saw the Hilderbeast on Letterman, she had all the questions and answers scripted, Letterman sat there like a dope, they didn’t talk during the break, and the Hilderbeast then moved on with Letterman looking like a absolute a$$.

That also is the last time I watched his show. If he’s going to sit there like a lump and let some unconvicted felon tell him what he’s going to ask, then he doesn’t need my attention.

"Letterman has both Repubs and Dems on his show"

True. but, he can't contain his demeanor when it's a Republican. When asking a political issue question, he turns red, starts shaking and stutters.

Don’t watch Letterman much these days. But IMO it’s still better than Leno’s show. He’s way too ingratiating.

I’ll watch only if he invites Juanita Broderick on the same show.

I stopped watching after he insulted Rush Limbaugh on the show several years ago.
