Three female mountain gorillas and a male silverback gorilla were found shot dead this week inside a national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a conservation group said Thursday.

The bodies were discovered inside Virunga National Park but it was unclear who killed them and why, the International Gorilla Conservation Program said in a statement.

"Just over 700 mountain gorillas survive in the wild today, and none exist in captivity," the group said. "For such a small population, the unnecessary and indiscriminate killing of four mountain gorillas is a huge loss."

“”Just over 700 mountain gorillas survive in the wild today,..”

How can the be so sure?

On another note, 4/700=0.57% So, 0.57% is a hugh and series hit! I hope nobody moves my cheese!

Every time an anti-abortion fanatic makes an irrelevant post on FR, God kills a fetus.

It is very hypocritical that a lot of animal conservationists and tree huggers (for non-rational reasons, so excluding those who view it from a stable ecosystem angle) are abortionists.

In inherent value, one human is worth more than all the other carbon-based life on the planet.

Gotcha. Wanton slaughter of animals is totally OK, and a source of jokes, if you take 0.57% or less.

The slaughter wasn't necessarily wanton; it was probably by poachers who killed the animals to sell to foreigners (Asians for medicine or Westerners for novelties). They were just driven off before they could take their kill.

I don’t get this. I hope these folks rot in Hell.

I really don’t understand killing whales, gorillas, etc. I’m not against killing animals for food, but there is a line not to be crossed...like killing rhinos and elephants for their tusks. Disgusting.

Re: If chimpanzees lifespans could be drastically reduced, they could be farmed and they’d be a valuable source of meat. (sort of an aside).

That is sick no matter how you cut it. Not to mention not at all relevant to the issue being discussed.

I don’t get it either. Nor do I understand the people who post here and make jokes about it.

The sportswriters also failed to note how many abortions were performed this week when I was looking over last night’s baseball scores.

How many deaths of any kind were lamented by the writer of those scores?

And not one mention of abortion in the entire article relating to Cal Ripken’s impending inauguration into the HoF.

Did the writer imply a tragedy over any kind of death in the Cal Ripken story?

Nothing in the stock reports, either.

Did they report on any deaths of people or animals in the stock report?

Or the movie listings. The comics. The crossword puzzle and the sudokus were absent that info also.

Same question, Did they shed a tear over the death of puppies or gorillas or other animals? No? Well then pay attention next time before you make inane comments that make you look foolish.

_______

Oh. Well that changes everything. Kill away!

I especially like how you underscored the word ‘animal’. Just in case I wasn’t sure that gorillas are not humans, eh?

LOL. You should take a bit of your own advice. We have a story in front us about the poachers killing gorillas, and one, now maybe 2, thread hijackers who want to talk abortion.

Of course my comments were foolish. They were supposed to be. What’s your excuse?

His comments were dead on. The fact that you are unable to grasp what he was saying only makes you appear foolish.

No 'hijacking' intended.

Just a statement of what seems important to the press.

Take it that you're one of those people who consider great apes to be practically human (or already 'people')?

The great apes, and whales, and dolphins, and other such creatures, are animals (not humans, not people).

They shouldn't be wantonly killed (not murdered), but they can be killed to provide sustenance or even clothing (though not such a supporter of the fur trade--leather comes from animals that would be killed, anyway, though).

A chimpanzee steak is not more offensive than a beef steak (or a whale one), in that a chimpanzee is not a higher creature than a bull.

And as the "(sort of an aside)" suggests, that comment wasn't very relevant, but it was minorly relevant. Furthermore, it wasn't an isolated comment; the preceding sentence was relevant to the topic at hand.

Souinds to me like the paochers were “surprised” by the authorities. They tossed the evidence in a place many would not want to “search”.
