Ailing Johnson hires top campaign strategist

Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota is still recovering from a December brain hemorrhage, but his office appears to be beefing up his staff for a 2008 re-election campaign.

Drey Samuelson, Johnson's chief of staff, said Wednesday that the office has hired Steve Jarding as deputy chief of staff. Jarding, who will work for the senator's congressional office in Rapid City, S.D., is a veteran political consultant who served as a top strategist for James Webb, the Virginia Democrat who upset Republican Sen. George Allen last November.

If he isn’t re-elected, his staff will be out of a job so of course they are “gearing up”. Gotta keep the gravy train running as long as possible.

if it gets leaked here, then what! ::grin::

Kinda scary having someone who worked for Daschle working for him. Gives us an idea where this is all headed, though! Buckle up for the ride.

I called the Johnson recently about a vote that was coming up. I stated that since he wasn't in circulation yet, it probably was not worth my time to call them but I was going to tell them about the vote anyway! The comment from the office was, "we aren't sure if he will be voting on this issue!" I will refrain from commenting further.

Will this guy really get reelected? Would one not rather be at home to convalesce?

If there is anything the Dem's can do about it, yes, expect it. It isn't about a person and their condition, in their minds, it is about the "control".

“As long as he’s got his staff running things, all he has to do is show up to cast a vote a directed by his handlers (”Say ‘aye’, Senator”). Of course, his staff will consist of DNC loyalists.”

THIS is the problem. The problem with SCOTUS too.

Senators and Judges don’t run the place, the staffers do. The Senator or Judge is a logo.

“Senator Johnson’s Office, Chief of Staff Snuffy running the show, may I help you?”

Their needs to be a 25th amendment-style rule about replacing positions like this. Keeps the clerks from writing the opinions and proping up the nursing home justices who end up falling asleep during oral arguments.

South Dakota is, essentially, doing without full representation in the Senate.

Yes, and SD's citizens ought to be raising hell about it. Why not?

Perhaps, they'd just as soon not have their Democrat vote.

Are the people of SoDak really ignorant enough to reelect this guy?

I feel bad for Mr Johnson health situation but there comes a time when you need to leave in a dignified manner and now seems to be his time.

Shame on the people encouraging him to run.

Remember, South Dakota elected this troika of buffoons to the Senate:

McGovern

Abourezk (a particularly nasty '70s Marxist)

Daschle

Excellent point......What is with mid west politics? I grew up in Minnesota and they have elected their fair share of goofy politicians and they seem to be supporting another idiot in Al Franken.

If Tim is speaking, and according to Tom Daschle about ready to run a marathon, why hasn’t he done a TV or radio interview or at least met with local reporters rather than political shills? If he is supposed to be back in the Senate in a matter of weeks isn’t about time his constituents heard from him directly? Johnson’s condition of health has become about as secret as Fidel Castro’s wellbeing. All we have about their condition is the word of people like Hugo Chavez and Tom Daschle.
