Costas Zings Bonds Over 'Midget' Comment

NEW YORK (AP) - A day after Barry Bonds called him a "little midget man who knows (nothing) about baseball," broadcaster Bob Costas said he wasn't upset with the San Francisco Giants slugger and responded with a jab of his own. "As anyone can plainly see, I'm 5-6 1/2 and a strapping 150, and unlike some people, I came by all of it naturally," Costas said Thursday in a telephone interview.

On this week's edition of HBO's "Costas Now," commissioner Bud Selig, Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling and chemist Patrick Arnold discussed Bonds, his pursuit of Hank Aaron's home run record and suspicions that Bonds has used steroids. Schilling and Arnold said they believed Bonds had taken performance-enhancing drugs.

Bonds viewed at least part of the show before Wednesday's game against Atlanta.

"I've actually always had a pretty cordial relationship with Barry," Costas said. "I have no ill feelings toward him personally. I regard him as one of the greatest players of all time who got an inauthentic boost and then became a superhuman player. I wish him no ill whatsoever."

Costas said he understood why Bonds might have denigrated him.

"He's under tremendous scrutiny and some pressure. It's no big deal," Costas said. "This is a consequence of doing your job, and I've never tried to do my job in any case with the intention of calling attention to myself. I think if people watch the program, they can judge for themselves."

Told before Thursday's series finale that Costas claimed he came by his physique naturally, Bonds responded, "How do you know?" before going on to say he didn't care.

Most hated man in America exercising his intellectual prowess.

In this specific instance, both Barry Bonds and Bob Costas are mental midgets.

Say what you will about Bonds, but I think Michael Vick is a bit more hated, and rightfully so.

Barry Bonds - the man that puts the ass in asterisk.

Bonds is much better liked when he hits a home run once a week rather than every day. As far as his testimony to Congress, it was probably as truthful as Congress’ testimony to the US on any given day.

Barry Bonds. Always wondered if he suffers from the withered testicles that sometime occur from steroid use. LOL

Bonds has a free pass to say and do anything. He got it when he was born.

Just as most Americans have the right to dislike him and I have the freedom to consider your attitude repulsive.

Misery loves company.

Not a Falcons fan by any stretch, but I'll be pulling for them this year if for no other reason than a winning season would show the Vick fan club (both past and present) that their vastly overrated "role model" is an inessential ingredient as far as team success is concerned.

Intresting stat: The Falcons are the only team in NFL history never to log two consecutive winning seasons. .....42 years of futility that makes the N.O. "Aints" look like the Lombardi Packers by comparison.

I would pay to see Bonds beat the crap out of Costas. Costas’s attitude makes Bonds come off as some great role model.

Actually, you can add the Carolina Panthers to that list. ....even though they’re a relatively new franchise.

At least the Falcons and Panthers have both made it to a Super Bowl.

Now the Cardinals, who have never even made it to a conference championship game, now that’s sad. (Even the Detroit Lions did make it to one NFC Championship Game)

Wha? For pointing out the truth? Bonds is damaged goods, and there is nothing he can do about it. He will get the asterisk he most assuredly deserves.

BTW, in a related subject, what are the odds that nobody will cross the finish line at this year's Tour de France?

Good for Costas.

Have you ever listened to his radio show? The guy is so damn full of himself that it's amazing that his 5'6" frame can fit inside the studio.

He has some interesting guests on but usually he does most of the talking.

I got a kick out him during the US Open broadcast last month. They we talking about how tough Oakmont CC is (and it is tough) but then Costas starts making fun of anyone who would be a member of that club saying he doubted that many of them could break 100 on that course.

I have played at Oakmont many times with members, and they are generally pretty damn good golfers. I struggle to break 100 there but the members I have played with always shot in the 70s or 80s. You don't join a course like that unless you are pretty damn good at the game but egomaniac Costas figures that if he couldn't break 100, then the members couldn't possibly do it either.

The Lions won the NFL Championship in '35, '52, '53, and '57. .....but of course haven't done squat in the Super Bowl era.

True enough, a good case can be made for the Cardinals being the most pathetic franchise in NFL history.
