Former US veep Mondale accuses Cheney of power grab

Former US veep Mondale accuses Cheney of power grab Jul 29 02:01 PM US/Eastern Vice President Dick Cheney has presided over an unprecedented power grab during his six years in the White House, former Vice President Walter Mondale wrote in a rare, scathing critique Sunday.

Mondale, the former number two to Democratic President Jimmy Carter in the late 1970s, in an opinion piece appearing Sunday in the Washington Post newspaper, fingered Cheney as the chief transgressor in a White House guilty of "great excess" and "exceeding its authority."

He wrote that since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, "Cheney set out to create a largely independent power center in the office of the vice president."

"His was an unprecedented attempt not only to shape administration policy but, alarmingly, to limit the policy options sent to the president," he wrote, calling the George W. Bush administration "seriously off track" in the unprecedented amount of power it has ceded to Cheney.

"Through his vast government experience, through the friends he had been able to place in key positions and through his considerable political skills, he (Cheney) has been increasingly able to determine the answers to questions put to the president -- because he has been able to determine the questions," Mondale continued.

In particular, many of the policy positions Cheney has pushed through on handling terror suspects and the domestic use of intelligence "have proved offensive to the values of the constitution and have been embarrassingly overturned by the courts."

Mondale also slammed "Cheney's zealous embrace of secrecy" and his "near total aversion to the notion of accountability" to the public and Congress.

American people accuse former Vice President Mondale of advance senility and rabid Cheney envy.

I still can’t believe Minnesota went against Reagan.
It seems downright unamerican.

Washington DC, I can believe.

Yeah by a couple thousand votes...and please remember what happened in Minnesota in 2006.

I may be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Mondale is the only major party candidate of either party to ever lose an election in every state.

Nah, Walter, VP Cheney is loathe to share information with Congress because he doesn't want to see it splattered all over the front page of the NY Times and the Washington Post the following day, OR end up in the hands of our enemies, via diplomatic pouch.

I have reached the breaking point with every single one of these traitors and their increasingly insane comments. As Ann Coulter counters in “Godless”: “Democrats took the position that the spokesperson immunized the message from criticism, no matter how vicious or insane it was.”

Not me! If you want to sling mud, expect rocks in return. If you throw rocks, be prepared for grenades.

Mondale is an traitor and a loser - a traitor for attempting to overthrow the government and a lose - well it is obvious.

Make no mistake - the 2006 election was a vote for a coup d’etat. If these traitors aren’t stopped, there will be anarchy and civil war - not in Iraq, but here at home.

another one that should be getting a visit from the FBI. The Administration doesn’t do itself any favors by letting these leftists get away with sedition in the press.

Walt... your days were over long ago.

Oh yea, one other thing... the current administration is working to get back the authority granted by the U.S. Constitution - something it should have never lost - authority your former boss, being the weakling that he was/is/always will be, readily gave away to the Legislative and Judicial branches.

Now don't you have a pep rally funeral to attend somewhere in the world? Don't go to it being mad... just go to it.

I have never seen a Democratic candidate seek Mondale’s endorsement.

I’ve never seen him standing on a candidates platform, hands raised high.

He’s invisible during Demcratic National Conventions for the Presidency.

NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR HIM SAY ANYTHING.

Same goes for Dukakis. Both these guys were sent down the river to never never land a long time ago.

Wait, there’s a third guy that all Democratic candidates avoid being seen with at all costs of losing their election - Jimmy Carter.

The only folks who ever want to hear from them are Katie or the wackos at the Post (or NYT).

Obviously Carter didn’t trust him the way Bush trusts Cheney... If a person like Carter didn’t trust his fellow commie, it probably says much about Mondale.

Two things about Cheney. First of all, he was a CEO. He knows how to make decisions and get things done. The second is that Cheney is probably the least visible Vice President we’ve had since... Mondale?
