I'd say the first step should be to maximize the level of surveillance performed on law-enforcement personnel. To be sure, most cops are good most of the time, but footage of cops' actions would reduce the need to rely upon their word.
Besides--if they're not doing anything wrong, what should they be afraid of?

Interesting.... Cameras are okay but listening in on a phone call that is to or from a known terrorist is bad.... I just don’t get it.

“Americans, by nearly a 3-to-1 margin, support the increased use of surveillance cameras”
Just more evidence that Americans no longer want to live in a free society. My guess is that they’ll get exactly what they want.

71 percent of Americans favor the increased use of surveillance cameras, while 25 percent oppose it.OK, was anyone here asked that question for a poll? Does anyone here know anyone who was asked that question?

I was against them until a friend got mugged and beaten in Schenectady NY, there was a camera on the corner (lucky for him) and and ambulance was dispatched, (his cell phone was smashed), and the perps were caught in very short order.
The DA claims there will be no problem convicting them, and one is facing his 3rd felony - long hard state time for that one.

Wonder how long before they decide your living room, dining room and den are public areas since your family and friends and neighbors are present there?

I’m in favor of it. If you want privacy, stay in your house.

Surveillance cameras are one thing (NOT a statement of support), but the folks in London have taken it to the extreme. There the cops talk back to those being watched, correcting them for minor infractions.

Americans, by nearly a 3-to-1 margin, support the increased use of surveillance cameras...It appears that Americans, by a 3-to-1 margin, are dumber than fenceposts. I can now understand how Hitler gained popularity in Germany in the '30's - people, and especially poorly-informed people are lemmings.

I’m no longer surprised by my fellow Americans. By the time they realize they have given the government too much power and too many tools, it’ll be too late. It won’t affect us, but the grandchildren of our grandchildren, they’ll look back and blame us (they’ll have to do it privately of course).

This is really bad. It is the beginning of the end of freedom. But it’s legal.
How is it any different than if a cop sits at the corner and watches. Legal.
Think of the nosey neighbor who watches who comes to your house. Legal.
What is so dangerous (and unstoppable) is how easy it is to keep all this information, forever, and combine it cheaply with other public data to rob you of your privacy.
To: ECM
Typical bullsh*t polling. If 71% like the idea then one would think somebody we know would have been polled.Anybody?

We have one at our home that watches the Garage (our front door) and driveway.
Our local garbage company now has them.
So our driveway cam can now argue with their truck cam on if we did or did not have our garbage cans out for pick up. Takes the human element right out of that issue. : )
