Ministers insisted that British secret agents would only be allowed to pass intelligence to the CIA to help it capture Osama bin Laden if the agency promised he would not be tortured, it has emerged.
MI6 believed it was close to finding the al-Qaida leader in Afghanistan in 1998, and again the next year. The plan was for MI6 to hand the CIA vital information about Bin Laden. Ministers including Robin Cook, the then foreign secretary, gave their approval on condition that the CIA gave assurances he would be treated humanely. The plot is revealed in a 75-page report by parliament's intelligence and security committee on rendition, the practice of flying detainees to places where they may be tortured.

If we kill him, we won’t have to torture him.
Welcome to FR, btw.
We absolutely promise.... There will be no panties on the head.

hmmmm, I’ve lurked for a little while before registering/posting, and I’ve never seen that...
1998? That was clinton’s watch. He didn’t want bin Ladin turned over to him.
click on keyword “elvisbinladen” you’ll see a few (hundred.)
no wonder the british empire is no more.
May be time to do some torturing ~ OF THEM!!!
If anyone cares to read the actual report:

there is also the Government’s response document (12 pages).
Damned right, Pip!
page 53:
“What the rendition programme has shown is that in what it refers to as the war on terror the U.S. will take whatever action it deems necessary, within U.S. law, to protect its national security from those it considers to pose a serious threat. Although the U.S. may take note of UK protests and concerns, this does not appear materially to affect its strategy on rendition.”
I remembered with some unease, the role of Robin Cook at the time of the intervention in Kosovo. We had the incessant barrage of charges of "ethic cleansing". The dead pan claim of 100,000 unmarked graves, was parroted. A fat lot Cook cared about civilian deaths. So far so good. The Serbs were shown little mercy.
He had resigned his ministerial post, because he refused to back the Tony Blair commitment to the invasion of Iraq. One can draw a sad conclusion. He sought to kow tow to Islam. There are many fools in that country to believe they can buy some sort of peace. None of 'em have read and digested their country's past history.
A quick check by old friend Wikipedia tells us that Cook (1946-2005) was climbing a Scottish mountain and took a heart attack at age 59 years.
Oh, for the sake of pete ... what kind of wuss do they have running that place? Had he been there in 1775, we’d have had the whole shebang by 1777.
‘no wonder the british empire is no more.’
And it’s no wonder the US never had an empire if it’s citizens believe everything they read in the rabidly left-wing Guardian.
So really they were concerned about the Clinton admin torturing Bin Laden...and it was the Clinton admin that refused to rule out torture.
The British Empire is no more? Newsflash! This is old news. As a Brit I’m ashamed of the British Empire yet Americans repeatedly fire this fact at us Brits like it’s a criticism. So we gave all the people we invaded and made our slaves their land back, and this is a BAD thing? Doesn’t sound very pro-freedom to me! Didn’t Hitler do a very similar thing?
But for bin Laden, I like the idea of panties on the head, with the crotch area rubbed with fresh pork ribs. Sorry, that’s the way my mind works.
