WASHINGTON, (AP) -- Undeclared Republican candidate Fred Thompson on Tuesday reported raising nearly $3.5 million in one month for his expected presidential bid, lagging behind his backers' goal of $5 million.
The "Law & Order" actor and former Tennessee senator filed papers with the Internal Revenue Service that showed he spent about $625,000 in June, the first month that his preliminary campaign committee was operating.
At $3.46 million, the total raised fell short of the $5 million goal his backers initially set to reach in one month for his committee to "test the waters" of a presidential bid.
Thompson did, however, collect more than several other Republicans in their initial fundraising months as prospective candidates. . . .

I’m in the wrong line of work, I need to be a political water tester. 3.4 million bucks in a month and he’s not even an actual candidate yet. And what happens to all that money if he says “never mind”?

Should he fire the folks that said he would get $5 mil in June or those who failed to help him get that much?

You can be sure that there are 100s of pages of regulations about what can be done with it. No election law attorney will go hungry.

>>>>>Thompson did, however, collect more than several other Republicans in their initial fundraising months as prospective candidates. Still, Thompson's take doesn't even compare to Mitt Romney's one-day $6.5 million haul.More then Rooty and McCain. $3.4 million is big bucks for a testing the waters candidate. Romney`s take was by design and included a personal loan of $850,000.
FredT`s doing well. Especially in the way he's been knocking down support for Giuliani. A significant drop off.

Did anyone with the campaign say they "would" get $5 mil? Or did they say that was the goal? I am skeptical of the $5MM figure altogether. I don't recall this figure ever being anything more than a rumor.

He’ll have to decide that he’s actually running, before he gets any money from me.

Guess it depends upon which media outlet is writing the story..... In either case he's done well when compared to the others.....
The Hollywood actor turned White House contender announced he had raised more than $3.4 million in June -- less than the predicted $5 million -- for his presidential campaign-in-waiting, amid some concerns he has waited too long.

Funny, I’d be happy with this for a month. Extrapolate it out for the entire quarter and he’s doing fine.

I think that if you go back to when they originally started raising money, you’ll find that they were aiming for the larger donors to donate AFTER July 1st. I believe I remember reading that several times. What say you folks?
