The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent QB Daunte Culpepper, Raiders Head Coach Lane Kiffin announced after this afternoon's Training Camp practice at the team's Napa Valley Training Complex. The 6'4", 265-pound Culpepper spent last season with the Miami Dolphins. Culpepper, who is entering his ninth season in the NFL, spent the first seven years of his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings.
"We are very excited to have Daunte, and add him to the mix and see if he can help us," Coach Kiffin said. "We think that he adds definite competition."
The former Central Florida star has played in 85 league games with 84 starts, and has completed 1,759 or 2,741 pass attempts for 21,091 yards, 137 TDs, and 89 INTs. His best season came in 2004 when he threw for 4,717 yards and 39 touchdowns.
Culpepper was originally selected in the first round (11th overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft by Minnesota

Hey it could be worse...we could bring back Jeff George.
They should bring batk George Blanda.
They should bring back George Blanda.
How about Jay Schroeder...?
Marc Wilson...?
Yeah, that's the ticket....
At least Marinovich could throw a good party.
Well...since it involves Culpepper, what do you think about this move?
Well, that was the problem. Pot head thought he could continue his festivities on the field.
Don’t forget Ken Stabler.
Yeah, but that decision to draft him came ten years before they acquired Plunkett. He was great with the Raiders.
As evidenced by his 4 INT "performance" in the 91 Wild Card game against Kansas City.
That will take some preparation.
Imagine what the Raiders could have done with a real quarterback.
GO CHARGERS. That’s right. I said it.

They should have gone with Garcia.
I guess they just could not wait for Vick.
I wonder if the Falcons are shopping for another QB?
The Falcons should have picked up Culpepper. They have an opportunity to make Vick a distant memory. Sign Culpepper for one year to bring Shockley along. What could be better? You have a local kid and UGA QB. Not only can he throw the ball, he’s got wheels as well. It would put many fans in the seats.
Personally, I am not a big Falcons fan but I am a HUGE Georgia fan, I would be watching every game if DJ were playing.
Hey it could be worse...we could bring back Jeff George.
Man, that is EXACTLY what occured to me as well.
GO CHARGERS. Thats right. I said it.
If I’m going to watch a game without the Bengals, its one involving the AFC West.
Any of those games are brutal, and a blast to watch if you don’t have a ‘dog’ in the fight.
Don't you think they should concentrate on getting the top draft pick signed before this clown???
Sign Jamarcus(sp) NOW!!!!
packers rule
Have to agree (not about the Bengals part, that is just crazy) that AFC West games are always fun to watch. Even when one of the teams is down the games are usually extremely competitive and you have some great homefield crowds (or scary in the case of Oakland) that add to the experience.
Where’s Steve DeBerg?
Have to agree (not about the Bengals part, that is just crazy)
(chuckle)
Oh...you and I are going to have fun once the season starts....LOL!
No need to worry, they've got "Joey Ballgame".
As a long suffering lions(cough) fan I can attest to his(cough)abilities.
Hey joey...Or-a-gahn!(he just hated when people mis-pronounced Oregon that way)
GO DAWGS, DJ is a Vick style player (except DJ has class), but may need more NFL experience.
The Falcons have had many chances to pick local Tech and Georgia stars, but avoided picking them, with the idea that it put too much pressure on them. I think that is stupid, but that was Rankin Smith’s idea, and now Arthur Blank is in charge.
UGA is picked third the the Eastern SEC. I don’t think Florida will be able to repeat last year, but I know with Tennessee and Florida it will continue to be tough.
He sure looked damn good last year against the Lions.
hell, everybody looks good against the lion...
Looking forward to it, just so long as no Ratbird fans join in!
‘Looking forward to it, just so long as no Ratbird fans join in!’
Ah, what the heck, the more the merrier.
Reading today the injury bug is alive and well at Bengals camp. Two guys taken off the practice field on stretchers in the past 30 hours.....yikes!
this team and tradition fit Culpepper to a T.
The Raiders bettered themselves
I always thought Culpepper was a decent quarterback, personally. I couldn’t stand Vick, though. The idea of a running quarterback who can get knocked out at any time by a knee injury is just craziness. I don’t know all the antics of Culpepper off field but they certainly can’t be any worse than Vick who is likely to wind up modeling one of those pretty orange jump suits before long (or should.) I do agree with an earlier poster about Jeff Garcia though. I never could understand why he never got the credit he deserved.
Ha ha, the Raiders can’t suck enough for me! I think the Raiders and the Patriots will have the same records this year. The Patriots: 14-2, the Raiders: 2-14.
Yeah, I agree it is just that mocking the Ravens is the one thing Steeler and Bengal fans can usually agree on.
Who went down? Nothing serious I hope (and I mean that, never want to see anyone hurt and it is always more fun to beat you guys at full strength so there are no excuses).
gunshot or knife wounds?
Hell, they might even try for Pac Man Jones when he's through with his legal troubles.
Culpeppers antics off the field are equivalent if not worse than Vick's. He once got a "lap dance" from a stripper at a boat party.
Funny, I was born in Oakland (long time ago) and graduated from UCF when it was still FTU & had a 7K student body, so I ought to think of this as some sort of harmonic convergence. But I don’t. As a Raiders fan I have been out in the wilderness too long to still have the faith.
I was living in Tampa when the Tooz was at the University of Tampa.
Those days are gone forever, over a long time ago, oh yeah.
Maybe in some respects it’s a blessing in disguise that I was born after the “good ol’ days” of the team back in the 70’s and early 80’s? When a lot of guys I talk to mention Stabler, Tooz, Plunkett, Branch, George Atkinson, and so on, I have little to add except “boy, that must have kicked ass!” because I wasn’t alive to remember anything before Bo Jackson.
Hopefully we’ll get back to...well at least winning more than two games.
What’s the big deal with a lap dance compared to killing animals for Vick’s demented pleasures?
I never did get the significance of the lap dancing anyway. Is that supposed to be against the law or something?
Not checking the schedule, I hope the Dolphins play them this year (even if it's in Oakland).

Raiders v. Dolphins will be in Miami on Sept 30 (I believe).
In the late 60s and into the 70s, IMO the Raiders were one of the most exciting teams in pro ball to watch. Wide open offense. George Blanda was amazing coming in late in the game week after week to pull them out. I swear that when this 40+ old man trotted on the field in middle of the 4th quarter it must have psyched out the opposing defenses.
If you ever get a chance to see tapes of some of his 4th quarter exploits, you must do so.
40-year Viking fan here. Good luck with this guy. Keep him away from boats.
