Documents Link Tour Winner Contador to Doping (Files Turned Over to German Police)
UK Guardian ^ | Aug. 1, 2007 12:00 | Associated Press

German authorities said yesterday they have received documents from doping expert Werner Franke which he claims show the Tour de France winner, Alberto Contador, was involved in doping.

Franke said he has documents from last year's Operation Puerto investigation in Spain which show that the Spaniard, who won the drug-marred race on Sunday, had taken HMG-Lepori as a testosterone booster and an asthma product called TGN.

"We can confirm we have received the documents, and they will be incorporated into procedures of the district attorney's office," said Christian Brockert, a spokesman for Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office.

Brockert said the federal office will meet with the district attorney's office deemed to be responsible and assess the documents.

Contador, who rides for the Discovery Channel team, missed the 2006 Tour when his former team, Liberty, was disqualified because he and four other riders - plus the team director and doctor - were allegedly linked to Operation Puerto.

Franke, a molecular biologist, is not the first to say he possesses copies of the Operation Puerto documents in which Contador's name surfaces. France's Le Monde newspaper, along with several German ones, have printed parts of documents.

Franke apparently has acquired other documents, saying only he got them "in my briefcase" while Spanish police were not watching.

The Tour de France is officially a joke. And my kids wonder why I don't pay attention to sports anymore:

Tour de France: doping

Baseball: Barry Bonds

Football: Michael Vick

Basketball: gambling referees.

You forgot Gary Player at the British Open saying that a player has told him he was on roids. (Tiger?)

Maybe you should PING the TdF list....

If Contador would be disqualified we would really have a tight final (??) result. Evans 8” up on Leipheimer.

I say a match race on the Champs with both Evans and Levi’s teams plus
time bonuses to decide the winner.

Guys;

I think most of this is old news. Contador’s link to the Spanish Doping ring was reported and the evidence looked at last year. The link was the initials AC on a treatment slip. Nothing could be proved and he was cleared to ride this year.

If there is “new” documentation, where has it been the past year or so?

ScaniaBoy, you have some good cycling sources, is there anything new or just a rehash?

The difference is the UCI is serious about cheaters who pump up on steroids and blood doping,

major league baseball is not and turns a blinds eye to an
obvious pumped up steroid user breaking one of the greatest
records ever, and it will count as legitimate.

Yes, the last straw was when Bud Selig said he would attend the games and respect the accomplishment.

Yep. If MLB applied standards the way cycling does, Bonds would've been fired from his team, forced to pay back a year's salary, and given a two year ban from baseball.

I`m disgusted with MLB. It`s a f****n` joke.

My wish is to see the person who catches Bond`s home run ball to break Aaron`s record, keep it, then on home video, videotapes hmself burning the ball on his BBQ grill :-)

That was my take when I saw it here earlier today. I have been checking Velo News daily since the Tour ended to see if there is anything new. So far there's nothing. They reported this same story on Monday with the disclaimer from Contador that you mention. Until someone comes up with new information, I will not be concerned. It also seems like this Franke has an ax to grind...

I use “guys” like I use “all y’all”.

“y’all” - singular
“all y’all” - plural
