Newspaper editor shot to death in targeted killing on Oakland street

OAKLAND -- Chauncey Bailey, editor of the Oakland Post and a former reporter for the Oakland Tribune, was shot to death this morning on a downtown Oakland street in what police described as a targeted killing.

Bailey, 58, was shot just before 7:30 a.m. on 14th Street near Alice Street, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said a lone gunman dressed in dark clothing approached Bailey, shot him several times and ran away.

Bailey, who lives in Oakland, was known for his assertive style of questioning city officials, said police spokesman Roland Holmgren.

Holmgren said investigators believe the shooting was an assassination-style hit.

"This is madness," said Holmgren, who knew Bailey personally. "He held our feet to the fire; he kept me on my toes."

The Oakland Post, circulation 49,500, is geared toward the East Bay's African American community. . . .

Either something he wrote...or something he was about to write.

Really? Gosh sorry to hear that.

From my childhood I remember 2 parts of Oakland.

The hills and the east side.

Same with Palo Alto.

Pretty bad if U.S. journalists start getting killed for doing there job here much like what seems to be happening in Russia and Mexico.

Thanks, but feel sorrow for the victim, not for me.

I just moved to Oakland 2 months ago. There has since been 2 shootings in the 'hood that I know of. Plus that garbage strike thingy. That wasn't very good.

As a former reporter and editor, I can easily understand the rage that a person feels seeing their own behavior and actions reflected in the local paper. I once reported on an assistant city attorney driving to work one morning with his five-year-old son in the front seat and a blood alcohol count of .3, which lead to his dismissal. I was the target of his anguish and anger, which did require some support from local police. Say what you want about the media, it can sometimes be dangerous - even if all you report are just the facts.

The shooting also makes me think about the gangland mentality that pervades places like Oakland, and even neighborhoods here in the tiny town on the tundra. Many people appear to think that any slight permits them to respond with vandalism, threats, and even murder. Up here we’ve had a summer of burglaries and petty vandalism, and the local trooper told the community at a meeting three nights ago that his hands were tied when no one would step forward and speak up so he could make arrests. In the meantime, one guy who did step up had all the windows on his truck smashed in with a shovel. It’s all a sadly predictable consequence of believing that the law is a sham, society is racist and corrupt, and the only rules that matter are the rules you like.

My prayers to the family of this editor.

Lots of illegal gang/mob activity in Oakland and some have bought protection from the police department. The old time locals can even point out the illegal activities to you and apparently at least one old time local pointed out the wrong activity.

Holmgren said investigators believe the shooting was an assassination-style hit.

Exactly...but who ordered it?

Many people appear to think that any slight permits them to respond with vandalism, threats, and even murder.

When I went up against the Appoquinimink school district advocating for my autistic goddaughter, I found on three separate occasions, a screw, a nail and a golf tee in my tires which caused three separate blowouts. The girl's mother's tires were also nailed, as well as my daughter's boyfriend's truck. Can't prove they were actually responsible, but the harassments miraculously stopped when the family's lawyer made some phone calls. (Making the harassment public at a school board meeting in front of a packed audience didn't help them much, either.)

When you expose the truth, they will try to silence the messenger. Prayers up for this man's family.

Or something that he found out about accidentally. I’ve heard that hits like this are always drug-related. I don’t believe that.

I wonder why so many in the MSM fail to mention that it was Muslims that pulled the trigger.

America will pay for the sins of the open borders crowd.

Probably sooner than later if what I read is any indication.

“I wonder why so many in the MSM fail to mention that it was Muslims that pulled the trigger.”

And we know this how?

Comment:

After the full story was reported by hundreds of bloggers and several threads on FR, AP finally released a small blurb confirming that indeed the killer was a member of a Muslim crime gang.

Because of the War On Terror and the propensity of Muslims terrorist to want to kill infidels this should have been mentioned much further up in articles written by those in the MSM.

Hate is not mentioning that a certain group have announced intentions of killing a person, family, friends and wiping our country off the face of the earth.

It is just smart to be aware of who your enemies are.

Hagar said “friends come and go but a good enemy lasts a life time”.

thanks for the info

I’m not a big fan of a certain group. I wouldn’t like this group to get sympathy because of false accusations.

this story got no ink, perhaps because a certain group was involved.
