Kansas Late-Term Abortion Facility Closed While George Tiller Arraigned

Wichita, KS (LifeNews.com) -- The controversial late-term abortion facility in Wichita is closed this weekend next while abortion practitioner George Tiller is arraigned on charges he did illegal abortions. Tiller has been charged by the state's attorney general with violating a law requiring the signature of a doctor vouching that the abortion is medically necessary.

Tiller is scheduled to be arraigned next Tuesday on 19 criminal counts of doing abortions in violation of the law and he could face 19 years in jail if convicted and sentenced to the maximum prison time.

As a result of the legal proceedings, Tiller is temporarily closing his Women's Health Care Services abortion business and referring women to abortion centers in Kansas City and Oklahoma.

Operation Rescue President Troy Newman, based in Wichita, applauded the closing in a statement sent to LifeNews.com.

"We are rejoicing that for two straight weeks, Wichita, Kansas, the nation's abortion capital, will be abortion free for the first time since abortions began here," he said. "We pray that abortions will never resume."

He explained it is unclear when and if abortions will resume.

Tiller's clinic was also closed for abortions the first week in July and last month more than 500 pro-life people stood outside in a prayer rally hoping it would close again.

As the first response to the new charges, attorneys for Tiller have filed a lawsuit claiming the Kansas law is unconstitutional. Tiller's attorneys argue that the provision of the law that requires two or more doctors to sign off on late-term abortions is invalid.

In their July 5 motion, they also sought to dismiss the 19 misdemeanor charges Attorney General Dan Morrison filed that would have Tiller in jail as long as 19 years if convicted. He could also be fined $2500 per violation and lose his medical license.

Morrison filed charges alleging that before performing 19 late-term abortions in 2003, Tiller received a second opinion from abortion practitioner Ann Kristin Neuhaus, who Morrison said had financial ties with Tiller.

A 1998 Kansas law says that before an abortion of a baby 21 weeks or older, two physicians must determine if continuation of a pregnancy will lead to death or "substantial and irreversible" harm to a "major bodily function."

The consulting doctor can have no financial or legal ties to the abortion practitioner.

Newman said the closing is the latest in a string of good news.

"Because of public pressure brought by Operation Rescue, over a dozen clinic workers have quit their jobs with Tiller and dozens of companies will no long do business with him," said Newman.

This is what I am afraid of. However, every day this mill is closed is a good day. I love the term “women’s health care center” - which means KILLING FIELD. These people cannot even state what it is that they do. Isn’t Kathleen Sebelius the governor of Kansas? She is a big pro abort. Why won’t the people vote these jerks out?

You are right: Mr. O. did a good job on the Tiller story. I think, however, that as far as FR is concerned, somebody is giving him the wrong information. He seemed more apologetic last night.

While I certainly don’t trust Morrison to gain a meaningful conviction in this case, I will be thankful for every day that the facility is closed.

Next up is the KC clinics.

I pray outside a NY PP and a “neighbor” of PP always wandered by and took people in our group pictures without permission.

One day I brought my camera. There was a police detail there at our request to protect us from false charges.

I walked up to the “neighbor” and asked if I could take her picture ... and she began stuttering and carrying on ... and scurried away.

A police officer informed me anyone can take anyone’s picture anytime they want.

I still (LOL) just thinking about her.

I used to pick my nose for the cameras when I led those protests. Once I held up a sign with my name and address (I was a pastor and my info was public anyway). Just goof with them. They are just trying to intimidate you and if you laugh at them, they generally go away.

We used to send couples and girls into a clinic. One simply stood up and said "if God is aware of what is happening here today, don't you think it would be better for all of us to walk out of here." Sometimes the Catholics would just recite the rosary. The best results we had at a clinic was staging 3 couples to make appts for abortions and go in. One of them acted all upset at the literature we gave them and said stuff like "they are saying we are killing babies." Another would respond with "they are just crazy religious nuts, it is just a mass of tissue" and the third would say (after receiving the info from the first) "i dunno. It looks like a baby to ME. It says here that the heart is beating and brain wave activity is happening." By the time the staff wised up and threw them out, two other women had made a decision not to go through with it. You might get a letter from a lawyer, but it is fun and they can't touch you. (in a somber and serious way, if you can find mocking the Gestapo at the doors of Dachau "fun")

They wound up screening their prospective "patients" to the point of aggressiveness, being so paranoid we were planting other stooges.

If that is the case, then it is time for me to get a digital camera to take shots of the late term women going in, and pray I am still there when they walk out to get a second shot. The facility in SD is supposedly not allowed and not equipped to do late term. In the last 2 months there were 2 late term who walked in. The first one I reported and the cop wouldn’t do anything about it...the security officer for PP came out and soothingly told the officer that I was yelling at the clients and that the late term woman was escorting someone else to have an abortion. I said I would only believe it when I saw her walk out as Pg as she was when she went in. The officer’s response to me was, “The security officer is a nice lady, she wouldn’t lie.” and during the conversation just prior to it he tried to assure me that the Dr wouldn’t do anything that was illegal! (Who is deluded here, to think that all abortion doctors will hold to the law?) I was also told to stop yelling at the clients or I would be removed. Hmmmm! Take away MY rights? According to another officer, I was not yelling or causing a disturbance. (All in interpretation.) When a distraught teen was crying on the sidewalk I did try to talk to her. It took all I had within me to stay on the sidewalk and not enter the property!Perhaps I should ask the male security guard if he would like to pose for his picture!?
