....what are you surprised? They’re libs. If this guy had been towing a liberal line, they wouldn’t have had a problem with this guy being in uniform.

This about says it all; except the moderator appeared to be a very stupid person. Military or no military rules; this guy was one hothead. No control.

This brings to the fore the main problem of the politics of military engagements - who speaks for the troops?

In principle the troops on the ground are the ones who know the score. But in principle democracy depends on having a military which does not interject itself into politics.

How are we to square that circle? The leftist answer is that it doesn't matter what military people think - at least, not when those military people disagree with them. IMHO the conservative answer has to be to ask, "How is recruitment doing?" If the military are frustrated and demoralized in Iraq, the grapevine will transmit that fact to society and will suppress enlistments - to say nothing of reenlistments.

Does John “I served in Vietnam” Kerry have anything to comment on this?

Funny thing happened on that link. There is NO SOUND when the soldier is speaking.

Years ago I read a comment by then Colonel Wesley Clark concerning the dismaying lack of political support for our forces in Viet Nam and the abhorrent impact of that on the overall public support.

I wish I could find the quote again. It was very edifying and the Colonel (he was not yet a general, could have been Major or Lt. Col.) avowed, "Never again!" in so many words.

Yet, here he is today after so many years among those very folks. . . .

Isnt this a contradictory statement by the soldier on the panel.

“You may not use any political speech while you are in uniform.”

Doesn't that speak volumes about how our troops are handcuffed and threatened by rules that only allow Dissenting ex-Military Members to bloviate and commit acts of treason against our country. The left joyfully using military policy to only allow one side of the argument to be represented.

Disgusting

For those of you who are surprised by the treatment of the military member in this story I offer the following model/template of modern liberal behavior.

The accuracy of the model is uncanny don't you think? See the world through these goggles and nothing will suprise you again.

The Left's Eight Commandments

I
Thou shalt create an illusion of invulnerability shared by most members to foster excessive optimism and encourage extreme risks taking

II
Thou shall not allow any member to question the group's inherent morality, instead members shall be encouraged to ignore the ethical or moral consequences of their decisions

III
Thou shalt promote collective efforts to rationalize in order to discount warnings, or other information that might lead members to reconsider their assumptions before they recommit themselves to their assumptions

IV
Thou shalt reinforce stereotyped views of enemy leaders as too evil to warrant genuine attempts to negotiate, or as too weak and stupid to counter whatever risky attempts are made to defeat their purpose

V
Thou shalt self-censor any deviation from the apparent group consensus, inclining each member to minimize the importance of their doubts and counterarguments

VI
Thou shalt create and maintain a shared illusion of unanimity concerning judgement conforming to the majority view

VII
Thou shalt apply direct pressure on any member who expresses strong arguments against any of the group's stereotypes, illusions, or commitments, making clear that this type of dissent is contrary to what is expected of all loyal members

VIII
Thou shalt appoint mindguards to protect the group from adverse information that might shatter their shared complacency about the effectiveness and morality of their decisions

Any veterans care to comment on the moderator’s insult?

Wes Clark took the mic and tried to explain what had just occurred: The argument appears to be that you’re not allowed to participate in politics while wearing a uniform, or at least that you shouldn’t, and that the questioner was engaging in a sort of moral blackmail, not to mention a violation of the rules, by doing so. Knowing fairly little about the army, I can’t speak to any of that.

Actually this is correct, as far as it goes. Military members are not supposed to do politics while in uniform. They also cannot run for office while on active duty. (some exceptions for activated reserve/guard). They can ID themselves as military members, but must make it clear they speak only for themselves.

The rules apply mainly to *partisan* political activities though, and so their application to issues oriented events like this is at least questionable.

Still the moderators reaction was also out of bounds, way way out of bounds. It's none of his business, the military member doesn't answer to him, but rather to his branch of service, and of course to his commander(s).
