UPDATE - apparently Megahed didn’t get too far:
SNIP:
A judge set bail at $200,000 for one of the defendants, Youssef Megahed, but the government immediately appealed, which means Megahed will remain in custody.

USF Suspect Produced Video on Remote Controlled Explosives

by IPT
IPT News
September 14, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “TAMPA - When a South Carolina police officer pulled over two Egyptian engineering students for speeding last month, he noticed one trying to put away a laptop computer.

That computer contained a 12-minute video showing how to take apart a remote-control toy car and reassemble the wiring to make it into a remote detonation device, a federal prosecutor said Friday. The video’s narrator, a graduate student at the University of South Florida, said the device helped “to save one who wants to be a martyr for another battle,” the prosecutor said.”

UPDATE:
USF Terror Suspect Had Two Passports, Different Names
9/16/07
By Annie Jacobsen in category The Al-Qaeda Threat

The St. Petersburg Times offers new details on University of South Florida terror suspects Ahmed Mohamed and Youssef Megahed (Egyptian transliteration: “Mujahid”).

In addition to providing details about the explosives, ammunition, fuses, gasoline, bomb making instructions and martyr-referencing video that the pair were carrying when they were pulled over by police for speeding, the Times provides alarming details about Megahed’s travel documents. These details include:

~Megahed had two different passports at his house: one with his photograph and name and a second passport with his photograph and a different name.
~On July 29th, one week before being arrested, Megahed and his brother went to Sears and had additional passport-sized photographs taken of themselves.
~Megahed was denied naturalization in March of 2006 because he’d not spent the requisite calendar days in the United States. During a five-year period, from 1998-2003, Megahed spent 1,600 of those days in Egypt (out of a total of 1,825 days).
~Authorities cited Megahed’s travels to Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and Canada to support their argument that he’s a flight risk.

“Experts Say Explosives In Car Trunk Were Unlikely To Harm Naval Station”
By ELAINE SILVESTRINI The Tampa Tribune

Published: Sep 26, 2007

TAMPA -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “One tracker disagrees with Turley, saying that YouTube is a popular site among jihadists.

“There is nothing at all ‘strange’ about jihadist use of YouTube,” said A. Aaron Weisburd, founder of the jihadi tracking Web site Internet Haganah and director of the Society for Internet Research, a nonprofit counterterrorism research organization. “It suits their purposes quite well.””

TSA to scrutinize remote-controlled toys

By EILEEN SULLIVAN, Associated Press Writer 33 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Airport screeners will be taking a closer look at remote control toys in carry-on luggage due to concerns they could be used to detonate bombs, U.S. officials said Monday.

The new practice is not a result of a specific threat, according to the Transportation Security Administration. But authorities recently arrested two Florida college students and accused one of them of posting a video online with instructions on how to use a remote-controlled toy to set off a bomb.

Passengers — including children — carrying these toys may have to go through secondary screening.

“While not associated with a specific threat at this time, TSA is aware that remote control toys can be used to initiate devices used in terrorist attacks,” according to Monday’s press release. “Transportation security officers have trained on this possibility and travelers may encounter additional screening when bringing remote control devices in carry-on luggage.”

Affidavit Shines More Light on USF Case

by IPT
IPT News
September 27, 2007

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “FBI agents in South Carolina apparently waged a new search earlier this month on the Toyota Camry driven by two University of South Florida students charged with illegally transporting explosives.

In the affidavit by FBI Agent Daniel J. McTavish, new details emerge about a video found on defendant Ahmed Mohamed’s laptop computer. The 12-minute video is narrated by a man with an Egyptian accent whose face is never seen. He demonstrates how to alter a remote controlled car into a detonator.

Mohamed told South Carolina police that he made the video “to assist those persons in Arabic countries to defend themselves against the infidels invading their countries,” McTavish wrote. That includes “American troops and those forces fighting with the American military.”

Investigators also found files labeled “Bomb Shock” and “High-Order Explosives” in the computer. The latter file contained information on using TNT and C-4, McTavish wrote.”

Egypt hires lawyer for USF student facing explosives charges
TAMPA, Florida — Egypt’s government may be hiring a prominent Tampa lawyer to represent an Egyptian college student facing explosives charges.

John Fitzgibbons is best known as the attorney who kept teacher Debra LaFave out of prison after she had sex with a middle-school student. He says he is in talks with the Egyptian embassy in Washington and likely will be hired to represent suspended University of South Florida student Ahmed Mohamed.

An odd video raises new questions about the USF students who caused a national security scare. Ahmed Mohamed and Yousef Megahed are already charged with driving explosives across state lines. Now prosecutors say Megahed’s brother tried to send a sinister code through a jail-house camera.
