Families in south displaced as former Baathists targeted
BBSNews 2007-08-04 -- BASRA (IRIN) Militants in southern areas of Iraq are reportedly targeting former members of the Baath Party in a bid to exterminate them, causing new displacements, according to local non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Former Ba'athist official Mustafa Bakri has lost his family, house and friends and now begs in the streets.
"Militias are conducting a campaign to exterminate over 4,000 members of the Baath Party," said Hassan Dureid, spokesperson for Iraqi Brothers Relief, a local NGO working in southern Iraq. "Most of these people didn't have a choice and were obliged to join the party during the ex-regime."
"Dozens of new widows of ex-members of the Baath Party have reported [the deaths of their husbands] in the past three weeks to southern governorates, and their numbers could increase, according to experts," Dureid added.
Militants affiliated with Shia groups refused to give detailed information about the campaign but said their action was to guarantee the "cleansing of any remnants of Saddam Hussein's regime".
"We want to prevent Saddam's followers from returning to power and the best way is to exterminate them," Abu Khalid Alawi, who said he was a senior local Shia militia member but declined to name his organisation, told IRIN. "Only Shia families in the southern governorates really know what we suffered in their hands and we don't want to risk having them back," he added.

Ethnic cleansing is going on all over Iraq. Walls are being built between neighborhoods. Partition is underway.
Baathists. Cry me a river
Many have said that it took a monster like Saddam to control the backward and tribalistic factions of Iraq and nothing less than ruthless domination will work there. As we, the US, can’t do that I suggest dropping this on the UN until most of the hotheads have killed each other off to to the point where most of the populace gets sick of the carnage, funerals and attrition.
i agree with the partition thought, if not formally, it will happen informally
Some joined the Baath party to play it safe. However a lot of them were thugs who enjoyed working for Sadam. I’ve no doubt that some of these poor picked on babies worked in the rape rooms and delivered the videos to the families of their victims.
And the Baath party is not an ethnic group.
btt
Were there any Shia Baathists?
Truthfully, I don’t know.
What goes around, comes around...
Payback can be a deadly bitch...
At least the murder and mayhem is being conducted by THEM in THEIR country against THEIR fellow murderous Muslims..
Sounds like a win/win scenario to me...
I checked the bbsnews site and by the headlines featured there, it seams to me they are a bunch of bleeding hart liberals. Their statement is misleading but to find out whom they are see the contact information: We would like to focus on geo-political issues that touch on real people and their cultural and social lives. How touchy?!
The article is based on NGOs observations. They are good at what jimmy carter presumably is good at: hammer some nail in wood and feel very important person.
Grizzled Bear said it correctly: Some joined the Baath party to play it safe. However a lot of them were thugs who enjoyed working for Sadam. And, I would add, that the Baath party was/is a socialist party. Therefore, is not surprise or news that the Shia militia (todays Islamist fundamentalists) will try to eliminate them. If given the opportunity, here they will start their mass killings with the liberals and socialist.
Sounds like a win/win scenario to me...”

“Baathists. Cry me a river”
Hang on...Baathists were the ones that ran things. Water, power, sewage, infrastructure...you had to be a Baath party member to have a good job. That’s why Al Qaeda is killing them off....then there’ll be no one with experience to make the country run. They’ve basically failed in defeating the US forces, so they’ve switched tactics...make US victory irrelevant by ensuring that Iraq is in chaos no matter what.
Yeah...back to the seventh century.
bttt
There is no indication Al-Qaeda is killing Baathists.
Those killing Baathists (particularly in Southern Iraq) are Shia militias (Badr and Mahdi).
The heart of the Insurgency was/is the Al-Qaeda+ hardcore Baathist cooperation.
Wow...those must of been some pretty bad dudes to get inside the baath party and survive as shia. They must of been the only ones who knew how to clean the rock grinder.
