Some of that, at least where I live, is a bit deceptive.
They name some bridges near me that are small, with 2-lane roads that don’t get heavy traffic.
I also know at least one listed that was replaced when they redid the road recently.

Maybe the political class should be attending to this issue rather then spending hundred of billions of transportation dollars on “prestige projects” and “political legacy building” over the last 4 decades.

Congress should stop naming anything after living people especially congressmen. It actually used to be illegal to do that.

Typical "ruke by fear" lib effort to incrementally get the government to take more out of your life. I'd bet that more money is pissed away in America yying to stop any corrrective measures by envirowhacko's.

Seen their toolbox? Starts with Environmental Impact Statements, the Endangered Species Act, Conservation Easements, and the list goes on. They want us to live in the stone age, and hopefully,America may start to wake up to their agenda. The SOB's don't want anything fixxed, and you living in a city, under government control.

All the article does is give a state-by-state listing of PERCENTAGES of bridges that are “structurally deficient”-—not an actual list of bridges (which would actually be useful).

Look again. Click on a state. I did Ohio. At the bottom of the box that opens, it says, "Click here to see major state bridges on list."

and of course next year...will cry that nj needs to raise taxes to fix the infrasturcture......

It was of course tragic and yet at the same time nearly miraculous that more lives weren’t lost in this. As it stands now, we have no Idea what caused the collapse. The media have certainly overexposed this and it has snowballed into this near panic they seem to have everyone in. Deficient could mean anything from a crack to oxidation to a loose bolt. I saw the video and can’t imagine what could have caused this. In Minnesota you can have 100 F or -40 F and what that means is there is a lot of expanding and contracting going on. The sodium chloride and other de-icing agents they use during the winter and I can only imagine, use very often, in Minnesota really eats away at concrete, steel and other materials. Perhaps it is good in a way that there is this scrutiny and maybe inspectors will do their job that much more diligently now and that can’t be a bad thing. I suspect when it’s said and done it is going to be a really compromised portion of this structure was just painted over or glossed over coupled with the degradation of de-icing and this years expansion was more than it could handle. The media has overblown this and I don’t believe our infrastructure is crumbling. “Doing something” about this will involve politicians, our money, and little rational thought. I think it’s best to wait and see what actually went wrong, then act, but then that makes sense and you can never count on the media or government to make sense. If it can’t be blamed on Bush, the war in Iraq or global warming, the Dems won’t spend long on it.

I have Firefox and it worked for me. Click on a state in the map, then on a county.

They’ve got numerous bridges from Collin County, TX on the deficient/obsolete list. One that caught my eye was:

O 68.4 289 COLLIN GEORGE BUSH TURNPIKE G BUSH TPKE @ PRESTON RD

George Bush turnpike was completed in the 90’s. One or the other is in the toilette: USA Civil engineering, or this database.

I live in the sticks and one “bridge” on the list was just redone and crosses a creek. The press is just trying to panic people...........the old “How can we scare them today” routine. It bolsters ratings.

HMMM, guess I have a “good” Firefox, then. Click on your state. Then click below the percentage listing. It takes a bit of time (even with my super fast cable internet). It will come up. Just be patient.

BTW - being “functionally obsolete” does not mean structurally dangerous. It simply is a judgement that the bridge will not pass traffic across it as the people doing the survey determine is efficient. I pay little attention to that rating. It I am comfortable crossing that bridge, I don’t want money spent on it. Only a very few bridges in my area are structuarally dangerous. Those I want fixed!

I don’t see the map.

I click the link: To see a list of deficient or obsolete bridges in each state, click here.

It takes me to a page, but no map is on it.

Thanks for the replies.

I copied the url from firefox into internet explorer and it works. I must be missing a plugin. ActiveX comes to mind.
