Police Link Bakery to Editor's Slaying

OAKLAND, Calif. (Aug. 4) - Dr. Yusuf Bey opened the doors to Your Black Muslim Bakery nearly 40 years ago, selling bean and carrot pies and hoping to inspire Oakland's poor to become "respectable and productive individuals."

The organization - which now includes chain of bakeries, a security service, a school and other businesses - was raided Friday, a day after the brazen daytime killing of 57-year-old Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey .

Seven people affilitated with the group have been arrested in connection with the killing and other violent crimes, including the bakery's chief executive officer, who is the son of its late founder.

Bailey's colleagues say he was working on an investigative story about the bakery's finances when he was killed by a masked gunman near the Alameda County courthouse in downtown Oakland.

Looks like the Bey family had a real problem with its members being whacked by other members of the "minority community" in Oakland, a genuine city of peace.

Smells like bull to me. I'd say he opened the bakeries because they are cash-intensive businesses, which are ideal for money laundering.

Charges are pending against him in a 2005 case in which he is accused of leading a Black Muslim group caught by surveillance cameras in November 2005 smashing up two Oakland corner stores.

I wrote at the time that this would be a test to see how serious America is about getting rid of home-grown Muslim terrorists. Two years and counting? Oakland has failed the test.

I'd bet that the "year long" investigation was one of those eternal investigations that has an uncountable number of slam-dunk prosecutions of the "low-level" criminals available at any time. Rather than haul those guys in (the proven "broken windows" approach), they continue to wait and wait for the top guy to be caught red-handed in some kind of James Bond take-over-the-world sceme.

Well Mr. Bailey paid for their dithering while they waited for the crime of the century that would put them on the Time Magazine cover. At that point they couldn't play the "not serious enough yet" game any more.

Stop me if I’m getting too cynical here, but I wonder if the investigators were racking up lots of good overtime hours during the year-long investigation.
