Student teachers enjoy urban experience

The difference in private/charter/parochial schools and public schools in Philly is astronomical. The regular, public schools are absolute Hellholes. Even Central High — which is supposed to be one of the “exclusive” public schools — is pretty frightening.

Certain federal student loans are forgiven if the student agrees to work 3-4 years after graduation in federally designated economically disadvantaged areas.

So these really are not loans but are "conditional grants" where the person has to repay if they don't meet the post graduation work requirement.

This is just another federal giveaway IMO.

I teach at a middle school that qualifies as one of those economically disadvantaged places I mentioned. I’ve been there 12 years. Fortunately, I teach Spanish-I to students who are higher achievers. I don’t get the “thugs” in my classroom because it’s an elective that requires some work on the part of the student. That’s how I’m going to make it to retirement age.

Actually, unless the name has changed—and it might have—I believe they’re called Pell Grants.

.....God Bless you!...I hope you’re able to ride it out...my wife did 5 years teaching remedial English at a juco....she taught the thugs that come out of the maryland public school system....they were arrogant,insolent,and threatening....the black women were the worst....

.....one day we sat down and rebalanced our budget and gave my wife retirement ourselves....we miss her pay check but we are a lot happier.

Thanks! You know, I’ve given serious consideration to what I might do if I couldn’t make it to retirement age. [No answer, so far.] The earliest I could retire [according to the current formula] is 5 or 6 years from now—but I don’t want to retire that young. We’ll see, I guess.

A formal mentoring system for these new teachers is the remedy currently being used to give them a kind of support that will make them want to stay in teaching.

What makes them stay in teaching is their inability to write that complete sentence that business correspondence demands.
