I don't know. Perhaps you will be kind enough to tell me.

Ad agencies claimed it was a tax on free speech.

Here is some additional information to consider:

When the State of Florida extended its 5 percent sales levy in 1987 to most services, 240 new full-time enforcement positions had to be created. Massive and expensive "education" programs were planned to dispel confusion and raise the expected first-year compliance rate of only 65 percent. But the unworkable tax never made it to its first anniversary. It was killed by an outraged citizenry, a chastened legislature and a thoroughly embarrassed governor.

Is it any wonder that FairTaxers don't cite Florida's experience?

More: Economists have shown that sales tax collection and compliance costs rise as the size of the business decreases. Small, family-run firms experience compliance costs that can be four to five times greater than those incurred by their big competitors.

Could it be that compliance is not as simple, and cheap as FairTaxers claim? Don't worry, be happy!

You are simply wrong! ALL that the 16th amendment did - and I quote it here - "The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several states, and without regard to any census or enumeration." was remove the the previous requirement that such taxes be apportioned among the several states according to the census! Doing so did, in fact, change the fact that previously individual taxpayers rarely had any significant contact with Federal tax authorities!

The wording of the 16th amendment is a direct result of the Pollock v. Farmers' Loan & Trust Co. decision. That decision was an aberration. You've got it exactly backwards.

The court has affirmed that the income tax meets the uniformity rule.

The record is abundantly clear so I will just leave it at that and let others decide for themselves which one of us is correct.

The key word in that is most. That was their mistake and is NOT what the FairTax proposes to do at all.

If it is not universal there certainly will be confusion.

Could be for a system that taxes SOME services and exempts others but, once again, that is NOT what the FairTax proposes at all AND the FairTax compensates businesses of ALL sizes for doing the necessary paperwork.

To: groanup; Obie Wan
Why don’t you respond to #15?

My answer to that question was already at the end of my post #12. If Obie Wan isn't going to read what I already posted then I see no reason to provide the answer a second time. But since you asked so nicely groanup, I'll answer again just for you.

OK, FairTax opponent, if you're so smart, what do you think we should do to fix the problem?

I want to see elimination of corporate taxes, elimination of death taxes, additional reductions in the marginal income tax rates until we find that we are the Laffer optimal point.

In addition I want to see Social Security privatized, and I am willing to pay extra money to pay for those who were promised this benefit, and never receive a penny of it myself. I also want to see Medicare reformed from top-to-bottom. I also want to see Tort Reform to reduce the exorbitant costs of insurance on our medical costs. And we need to reduce the scope of the Federal Government to its constitutionally mandated responsibilities and get rid of the rest. The Golden Goose that is America is way too fat and needs to be put on a severe diet.

These are what we need to do, incremental improvements in what we already have. This is already working and we should keep at it...even Boortz seems to think so. Boortz (9/20): "...the economy continues to go like gangbusters. We are right in the middle of an historic economic boom. Don't let the mainstream media or the Democrats tell you otherwise...we've never had it so good...
