Steel firm owner jailed [bridge builder; illegal aliens with invalid welding certification]
Sun Herald ^ | 8/6/07 | Michael Newsom

The owner of Tarrasco Steel, a company that supplied workers on the Biloxi Bay Bridge, was arrested and charged with hiring illegal immigrants on projects in three states. Some had improper welding certification.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Jose S. Gonzalez, 32, at his office in Greenville Thursday, according to a news release. Tarrasco Steel was hired as a subcontractor for rebar installation services to major bridge projects in Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee. The federal government considers those bridges as critical infrastructure, and they were part of routine inspections of facilities that if damaged could pose a threat to national security and public safety...

On inspections of several construction sites March 29, representatives of several federal agencies confirmed the majority of Tarrasco Steel employees were using bogus Social Security numbers, and 77 immigrants were arrested. Twenty-six of them worked for Tarrasco Steel. Some of them worked on the Biloxi bridge, the Huey P. Long bridge in New Orleans, and a project on Interstate 40 in Memphis, among others, the news release said...

Historically, the unions have been pretty good about voicing their concerns. I’m surprised we don’t hear too many complaints when it involves illegals in transportation and construction.

Simple, just pay off the union leaders. You don't really think they (union leaders) give a damn about the union workers do you?

Hmmm, looks like illegals were providing the sub-specification work US Citizens refused to. I never thought I’d see the day someone would be taken to task over this.

Perhaps someone could look at the trades in construction. Some of those jobs used to take an education before you were signed off to do some of the work. I get the impression there’s an end run on that these days.

The unions WANT illegals. I’m just shocked the rank and file don’t complain about it.

I appreciate the fact that it generally is true that unions are pretty vocal about this type of issue. In this instance at least, the unions have not interjected themselves into this incident.

I’m certainly no fan of unions, but if they want to squeal on any firm that is providing sub-specification work on our infrastructure, they’ve go my blessing.

I want my family, friends and fellow citizens to be safe.

my husband gets a periodic Journal booklet from his union, the BAC, and it’s got the “President’s Address” in english and then spanish on the next page. My husband has seen many a mexican on jobs...I would guess most probably are illegals...

So now welding is a job that American citizens won’t do?

Thanks for the comments Tina. I’m sure there are a lot of US Citizens of Mexican extraction that work on those sites, but my guess is that you are probably correct, depending on what area you live in.

The union I belonged to 4 yrs ago (hotel and hospital employees) participated in the immigration ‘freedom’ ride to DC. I tried telling the older woman that the only ‘immigrants’ who needed the ‘freedom’ ride were illegals who used false documents. She asked me where I heard that, saying they can’t work here without a green card. She was very pro union so I can see why she believed that there was no one working her with false documents. Funny thing about those unions, they get you the pay raises then raise their union dues. went up about 10 bucks in the 3 yrs I was in it. As far as grievances, the only ones they ever finished were for those who really did deserve to get fired. Glad I’m no longer union.

I was never a union member. When I was growing up I never read anything much positive about unions. Organized crime, violence against workers for this or that. Coercion and dues a must but you take it on the chin during strikes for raises that take years to make up fo wages lost. Then the unions sell out the rank and file whenever they like. Union funds are used to back liberal candidates. Pension funds are absconded or abused against the members best interests.

I have family members that swear by them. I,’ve tried to warn them but they think the unions have made their lives better. Oh well...

Thanks for the comments.
