Rich Suburbs Move to Democrats
RCP ^ | 8/7/2007 | Froma Harrop

GREENWICH, Conn. -- You know you're in a different kind of town when the signs against drunk driving show a line drawn through a Martini glass to which the artist thoughtfully added a stirrer. Greenwich, Conn., is one such town.

Greenwich is home to billionaire hedge-fund managers, private-equity kings and corporate chieftains, as well as ordinary multi-multimillionaires. Interviewing people here requires leaving phone messages with au pairs and catching folks between board meetings.

You'd think that Greenwich would be solid Bush-loving turf -- what with all those tax cuts for the rich. It is not. The voters are roughly 40 percent Republican, 40 percent unaffiliated and only 20 percent Democratic, but Bush won the town by only a sliver in 2004, even though his father grew up here.

The political shift toward Democrats has been noted in wealthy suburbs from Seattle to Philadelphia. In 2006, an amazing 63 percent of voters making from $150,000 to $200,000 chose Democratic candidates. Even those making over $200,000 favored Democrats, albeit by a small margin.

Greenwich has also become an incubator for liberal candidates. Local businessman Ned Lamont became the bloggers' hero last year for nearly unseating Iraq-war cheerleader Joe Lieberman in a Senate race.

Many of the very wealthy feel guilty about it. They assuage their guilt by giving to the poor.

But you don’t get rich by giving money away...so they assuage their guilt by voting democrat, and giving OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY to the poor.

I have to remind democrats who say republicans are the party of the rich.. that actually most of the super rich are Democrats.

Also when Democrats are in power the stock market tends to rocket up. A company with a guarunteed government contract with set profit margin is much more profitable then a company fighting to the death with other companies on a free market.

If the unions demand more wages our regulated monopoly company simply increases the price to reflect the increased costs, + adds some more profit.

Under socialism, they won't get hurt. They still get to keep everything. Even better, all their lessers get put firmly down. So when they hear the Democrats bash the rich, they know its for show. The last thing the Democrats will do is turn on their benefactors who contribute lavishly to their campaigns. So their interests are protected.

A lot of rich want socialism to be imposed on the peons since it will eliminate competition, after all, they’ve already got theirs, they want to make it impossible for others.

Today its a safe bet any one with lots of money is likely to vote Democrat.

That's because this "haves vs have nots" is another made up Democratic scheme to drive class envy. The real kicker is that when Democrat politicians yell about taxing the wealthy, they never actually clarify that they are taxing the wealthy INCOME earners. People like Buffet are not taking in any INCOME, hence get taxed very little. Our Income Tax code is meant to punish the wealthy income earners, i.e. small business owners and such, NOT wealthy Americans. There is a difference and is one reason why a revolution will need to take place before our current tax code is replaced.

Surprising thing is that nothing is stopping these wealthy people from just giving money to the Federal Government. Oh wait they do, to fund organizations like MoveOn.

Exactly! Why would you want to share it with every one else? They're being perfectly rational and figured out the Democrats as phony as they are smart in betting on the team that won't bite them back.

Dot-com millionaires have easy money? They didn’t have to work for it, making sound decisions and investment choices? Why be bitter about their success? Isn’t that what we want in America?

Limosine liberals.

This is orwellian reporting.

The MSM is telling us our 20 gram ration of chocholate will be increased to 20 grams. (not a typo)

This is just like the stock homless lady which the MSM, provided by the DNC, used in 2002 AND 2004 despite not being homless.

The MSM is trying to create the perception of momentum for the ILLUSION of persuation for the weak minded.

The rich don't work for a living, stupid. All their money is invested.

That's a big part of it; although in fairness, people in the financial services and investment industry really do work, and often do so for excessive hours each week. Inherited (old) money is another matter, and there's plenty of that in southern Connecticut to be sure.

But the other element driving these people to the Democrats is Social, not economic. Wealthy Northeastern people tend to be secular rather than religious, or otherwise belong to very Liberal churches and synagogues. They live in cloistered communities and almost never have to deal personally with the pernicious effects of crime and drugs. They tend to favor illegal immigration because that's how their lawn gets mowed and their hedges neatly clipped. They don't own guns (except as showpieces) and don't know people who do. They do not work with their hands, except at the keyboard. They and their children attend elite universities where their social liberalism is reinforced if not further radicalized. The get their news from the New York Times and CNN, and their opinions from the New Yorker, Vanity Fair, and Esquire and look down their noses at the likes of, well, Us.

To me, the white-guilt, uber-rich people are all John Edwards. And all of their loudmouthed women are Elizabeth Edwards.

Yes, they are fabulously wealthy (that’s what gives them the right to tell YOU what to do) and yes, they know what is right for America (as long as it doesn’t affect them) and yes, they’ve got two huge phonies that they can elect as POTUS (because Barry or Hillary can be bought), but don’t think for a moment that they can see past the end of their noses when it comes to the real problems we face. It’s just chic this season to be a liberal Dem, and that is really how those people think.

Best example: Mayor Bloomberg, who actually plans on buying the Presidency.

Truly rich people and truly big corporations have plenty of loopholes, tax shelters, and lawyers to enable them to evade any taxes the Democrats enact. In fact, those “liberal” taxes and regulations mostly harm small business and middle class people, which actually benefits the rich by wiping out the potential competition.

In addition, a lot of rich people today didn’t really have to work all that hard to get their wealth. In the old days, you’d hear of some guy who grew up on the streets, but through hard work built an empire. Most of these modern well-to-do suburbanites came from fairly well-off households to begin with. They never really had to struggle. Their daddy put them through college and they then got involved with a hedge fund through family friends. Or they sued someone for malpractice and raked in $20 million in one big swoop. Or they happen to be good looking and photogenic so they became the next big thing in Hollywood or the music industry.

In addition, rich people benefit from the illegal alien invasion (which drives down wages). They also feel sort of god-like so they become “socially liberal” on things such as abortion, homosexuality, feminism, and secularism. They even regard themselves as too big for America itself, so they sign on with a clown like Ned Lamont when he preaches one-worldism and quotes John Lennon’s “Imagine”.

Those are all generalities, of course, but quite a large percentage of the rich are not only left, but ultra-left. I remember old time Democrats like Scoop Jackson. He was a “liberal” who supported big spending on social programs and labor union issues, but he would never have supported the Cindy Sheehan crowd or same sex “marriage”. Today, the exotic left controls the Democrat Party, and they appeal to trial lawyers, technocrats, hedge fund managers, and the like, not factory workers.

Why the rich would want to vote Dem is beyond me.

Because the politics of this country is no longer about economics.

These arrivistes hate the white middle class and lower class with a passion, and since their gated communities and private police allow them to strictly regulate how much diversity they experience, life is sweet.

The article proves one well known fact: the ability to make money does not impart wisdom in other areas of life, especially politics.

It varies. I work for an investment firm, and most of the people who are closely involved with the actual business of the company are Republicans, while the executive and sales staff and the "little people" are all big Democrats. It seems the further away you get from being a person who actually contributes something meaningful to the core competency of a given organization, the more likely you are to vote Democratic.

I am trying to become rich, and it ain’t gonna make me a Democrat. I think really, you are what you are, regardless.

Me too. I believe there are a lot of us out there. Breaking the middle class glass ceiling will be the end of the Democrat "majority".

LBJ was convinced that once the Great Society gathered up minorities, they would be Democrats for life. Carter was open about taxing the crap out of us, and driving up interest rates. Clinton was unappologetic about adding to the glass ceiling with his election promise middle class tax cut that was actually a tax increase. The Democrat congress under President Bush (senior) pulled a fast one by ignoring their promised spending caps.

Too many people follow all the bogus polling going on; another Clinton gift. Prior to the Clintons polls were user to measure public opinion. The Clintons gave us polling intended to influence public opinion by exploiting demographics and push polling. The polling companies are businesses and they won't get repeat business unless they produce the results required.

The non-rich need to realize that the only way to peace and prosperity is to elect Conservatives. The rich who are Democrats are a lost cause.

But, I am a Country Redneck.

Never did like anyone named Elmer though. You would think in a German heritage community there wouldn’t be that many. I guess their parents didn’t like that Silly Wabbit either.
