I think the Indonesia quake was a 7.5 earthquake which is very large. Also it was a very deep quake.

I hope that the West Coast of the USA never has that large a quake because quakes here tend to be very shallow which can cause more damage.

Another aftershock - tiny 1.6 at 1:49 a.m. PDT

I understand.

I’ve been in the big, medium and small quakes and each one really was distinct.

Prayers for you and all. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be that close to the epicenter, etc... I don’t blame you for feeling uneasy at all!

The only earthquake I ever felt was the one that hit Southeastern Illinois in June of 1987. That was a 5.0, but it’s said people felt it in five states — buildings in Chicago shook, and even some in WI!!! We lived in the NW Suburbs of Chicago, and my family was eating dinner, and we felt the table shake, and just looked at each other wondering, “What in the heck was that”, and then didn’t think much of it.

I absolutely cannot imagine living where you are! Much braver than I that’s for sure - I’d rather deal with tornados. (o;

I’ll pray that this wasn’t a prelude of any sort, and that any aftershocks are very weak. Stay safe, and thanks for the first-hand reports...

I think a couch would be steadier and more secure than a mattress. Good idea. Thanks!

Goodnight and sleep well! The tiny aftershocks are normal and the longer the time from the initial quake, the less likely a larger quake will happen on the same fault.

If that part of the state were to slide into the ocean it would change the political landscape in California. The political party balance would reverse to the point that it would once again bring California back into the body politics instead of being a definite Democrat block vote.

Thank you very much for the link! I'm going to bookmark that under Earthquake Prep.

I live in the N.E. San Fernando Valley and didn’t feel a thing. Dog didn’t bark, cats didn’t run. In fact the dogs in the neighborhood didn’t bark.

Thank you very much for your kind thoughts and prayers! If I have to be in an earthquake, then this is the place to be, that is, if they’ve been telling us the truth about the retro-fitted freeways and earthquake proofed buildings.

I would not want to be in a 5.0 earthquake in the Midwest because of the lack of earthquake prep, nor would I want to be anywhere near a tornado.

I grew up in the Midwest and I did not like the towering black thunderheads, the silence before a bad storm, and it really wasn’t much fun to see a green sky or even the funnel clouds miles away.

God Bless you too and again, your prayers are much appreciated!

I used to live in LA. For 12 years. Pretty much back and forth over the hill. Hollywood and North Hollywood area, etc. Northridge sucked bad. I was in Hollywood near Sunset and Highland at the time, our house got knocked off the foundation, I woke up on my bedroom floor, having been tossed out of my bed from it. Wasn’t prepared, no flashlight, no food, nothing. We had no power for several days, all the food spoiled, couldn’t drink the water becuase a main broke nearby, etc. I live in New England now, and to this day, I keep a fresh charge in a nearby flashlight, and I keep my pants near by bed where I can grab them if I have to. All full with my keys, wallet, cash, etc. Just in case. This sounds like a mini-Northridge, I wonder if it’ll be ruled as a Northridge aftershock, but who knows. Northridge sucked bad. Scared the hell out of me.

That’s very interesting. It was very bumpy here and I’m on the opposite end of the Valley. Please be sure to log what you felt, didn’t feel and your reaction on the USGS site “Did you feel it?”

Has Strat showed up yet to tell us there is no possible way shaking here could be related to shaking in Malaysia?
