They stole all she had, she saw it as restitution. She liked sex and luxury.
What I meant by my statement was that 20,000 francs was nothing compared to 'gifts' her other lovers bestowed on her.
She was not a spy.

However, you don't execute women for being whores. That's not what she was executed for. She took money from the Germans and the French. She played a dangerous game and paid for it.

She was naive and stupid when it came to politics. She wasn’t a spy.

Here's a snip.
But beauty, then as now, was in the eye of the beholder and what European crowds were witnessing was the slow progression of time, and competition from other - younger - dancers. To supplement her income from performing, she turned to sex to pay the bills and fancied herself a "courtesan" - there to entertain and please the men in power: those in the government and military.
Even though Europe was slowly being divided by political turmoil and war seemed certain, Mata Hari paid no attention to which side of the political field her lovers were on. She was just as available to the Germans as to the French, and because of her citizenship, was able to freely move from country to country.
I'm no mata hari expert, I find her a fascinating woman in history.

She was naive and stupid when it came to politics. She wasnt a spy. I agree with that but she took money to spy. That got her executed.
You're buying into a "poor victim" rant by a lefty liberal. "She was executed for her lifestyle" is crap. Do you know who Pat Shipman is?

The term “congential syphillis” in this context indicates that the children were infected with syphillis during the the gestational period and were born with the disease. According to the article the husband passed syphillis to her and she passed it along to her unborn children.

Typical modern publishing ploy. Offer a radical theory challenging the conventional history based on a postmodern ideology of victimhood (subject persecuted for being a sexually-liberated woman, or a homosexual, or a whatever). Author second-guesses everyone on the scene from 100 years later, and purports to be able to read the mind of the long-dead subject.**************
I think you've nailed it. Imho, there was nothing about her worthy of admiration.

Lefty liberal rant, give me a break. Don't hand me that psyco-babble bs. I ain't buying it. She was not guilty of spying. I don't care who the author is.
You think she's guilty-fine. I think she's innocent-fine.

Interesting? Sad, yes. She and her children contracted syphilis. Who knows how many people acquired it from her. Hardly my idea of a fascinating life.
