It would be nice if we could get a Gurka unit to take over the spot.

"It seems to be lost on the British and American governments that Iraq holds the world's second-largest oil reserves. There is also the nightmare scenario of Iraq becoming an Islamic fundamental state, willing to give succour to groups like al-Qaeda."

Nonsense. The British and American governments have committed troops and considerable treasure to prevented such a nightmare scenario. Where has this "senior source" been sleeping for the past five years?

If you want out then get the hell out.

Only thing worse than a loser is a loser on purpose, i.e., a quitter. Get out.

Prime Minister is distancing himself from the Bush regime and its military objectives.

I love the unbiased press.

“About 2,000 trucks a day travel down the highway in high-security convoys, carrying more than 90 per cent of the food, water, ammunition and equipment for the 161,000-strong US force. The route remains a key target for insurgents and just last week two British soldiers were killed on it while providing security for a convoy.”....Yes, we have expected the British to protect our critical supply lines from Kuwait. It may be best if we do it for ourselves now, at, albeit, greater cost. As such a supply line is a definite ‘Achilles Heel’ I know that we have watched the Brits with a detailed eye while they have played their role to protect that supply line. Iraq may be the last venture we will engage in with Britain as a nation-state ally..Britains engulfment with the EU may not be far off. In sum, the Brown govt. in Britain is not the ally the Blair govt. was. I know we have planned for what is playing out. I like the idea of US forces securing the supply lines of US forces.

John Pike, the director of globalsecurity.org, an American defence think-tank Leftist website run by 1980's-era anti-nuke activists obsessed with putting operational security data in the public domain

There, we simply MUST be accurate.

When the coalition (US included) leaves, with the job undone, Iraq will descend into fundamentalist al Qaeda controlled terror state.

The ensuing carpet bombing of cities that will we need to knock them back in the box will be on the liberal's hands. But they'll just pat bloody handprints on their own backs, because surrender helped them win a few house seats.

Is Britain about to cover itself in shame? Is the new PM really ready to do such a thing?

I am convinced of 3 things about all of this...

1) The Brits will pull out leaving a power vacuum

2) That vacuum will be filled by Shiites (read: Iran)

3) In the end, no matter how long we or the British stay, I am convinced that the Iraqi’s will screw this up hugely. They are hellbent on tribal savagery and a thousand years of Western guidance, training, blood and treasure can’t change it because the Death Cult of Islam trumps absolutely everything.

But between now and then we should do our best and kill huge numbers of terrorists in the bug zapper we call Iraq.

That’s very sad news. British forces also ran from a fight in Afghanistan and left a whole AO to the Taliban.

Our neighbors in the Canadian Forces don’t run from fights, even in extremely difficult fights and other conditions. They smack the enemy down!

I don’t see the US sitting idly by while the Brits do anything that would compromise our chances and investment in Iraq.

Therefore we have a binary solution set.

Either we shoulder the load, or else we make it...difficult...for the Brits to leave.

This isn’t rocket science, and the Brits aren’t stupid.

That makies this, most likely, part on an ongoing negotiation between the US and the UK.

Been happening with various other players since day one of the WOT.

Bush has a good track record in similar negotiations, and I’m willing to wait to see how this one plays out.

“hat tip: hotair.com”

Hotair exactly.....

For as long as I can remember, there’s been talk of British troops withdrawing from Iraq. I’ve been to Iraq several times and my last operational tour was Op Telic 4 in late 2003, there was talk even then of a withdrawal of troops and that there hadn’t been any planning beyond Op Telic 6....I believe we’re on Op Telic 10 now.

What is interesting about this article is what it doesn’t report i.e. that Britain has seen a steady increase in it’s involvement and amount of troops sent to Afghanistan.
It is speculated by many British soldiers that Iraq may become a US sphere of ops while British troops cover Afghanistan. As a British soldier myself, I much prefer serving in Afghanistan at present, the RoE aren’t as restrictive for us and we can act as a proper army fighting proper battles, not a glorified police force, which is what many Brit troops see themselves as in Iraq.

I’ve seen much slagging of Brit troops and strategy on this forum, much of it by people that really haven’t a clue what they’re talking about and just making comments for comments sake. What they have to realise is that the British military in Iraq really doesn’t do anything unless it’s been agreed by the US first. Whenever i’ve received orders it’s quite clear that changes have been made, and not by my superior officers........

Notice , with the resignation of Tony Blair, and with the the new PM Gordon Brown, how Pres. Bush has now sidled right on up to France's Sarkozy.

Gordon Brown's tomfoolery is about to see France become predominant in Europe, with the help of the USA.

Britain has to go to the Islamic dogs, literally, before the British public wakes up to the real threat in their society, and the threat of Islamic Fascism to the world.

See yah, Gordy, hate ta be yah!

It seems to be lost on the British and American governments that Iraq holds the world's second-largest oil reserves.

I stopped paying attention at that point. This comment is either impossibly supercilious or outright stupid. Or both.

It's good, though, that we have smart guys like the Telegraph staff to inform us that Iraq has oil. Next up - a story on the ocean. It appears to be wet. Who knew?

Since so many of our "allies" are stepping away, letting the US hold up the log, why do we even bother with the UN and other forms of diplomacy? When it comes time for the bullets to fly, they all just run away in the end.

Let's just call a spade a spade and deal unilaterally with the world to start with. It will save a lot of time, money and misunderstanding.
