Gov Mitt Romney won the 2007 Ames straw poll, receiving 4516 votes, or 31%.
In a surprise, Gov. Mike Huckabee finished second with 2587 votes at 18.1%
11. John Cox with 41 votes. 10. John McCain with 101 votes. 9. Duncan Hunter with 174 votes. 8. Rudy Giuliani with 183 votes. 7. Fred Thomson with 203 votes. 6. Tommy Thompson, 1,039 votes, 7.3% 5. Ron Paul with 1305 votes, and 9.1% 4. Tom Tancredo with 1961 votes, 13.7%. 3. Sen. Sam Brownback with 2192 votes and 15.3%
Iowa state auditor David Vaudt unofficially certified the results.
14,203 ballots were cast.

Well, Tancredo speaks to some important issues.
Then again this straw vote was based on people getting tickets, often given to them by the campaigns, to go in and vote. Take it with a grain of salt. I hardly think it means that Mitt Romney has things wrapped up.

This actually is a good measure of there they stand. Thousands of people gave up their saturday and traveled to Ames to Vote. Iowa has a caucus system. It also requires a measure of commitment to give up an evening and attend a caucus which the shortest one I've ever attended was 3 hours. If rudy had participated it would be more accurate, but I think rudy is not as popular with the people who will vote in the the caucus as he is in the poles.

I watched TV today and they quoted Romney, Huckabuck and McCain numbers (and the two thompsons) but something as significant as Tancredo coming in 4th should have been mentioned.
The TV station was FNC.
I think both (Tancredo and Huckabee) did impressive considering the national polls have them in the low single digits. It is a good measure of ability to get volunteers, campaign organizers, etc.
I think Brownback and T. Thompson did worse than expected ... they were banking alot on a better showing. Both were looking to come in #2

Who cares? The whole Iowa thing is a big nothing. Giuliani wasn't in it, Fred wasn't participating and the number of votes was fewer than the average high school student government election.

Tancredo should have been booked for at least one of the Sunday news shows. It was pretty clear well before the straw poll on Saturday that he had a good chance of finishing in the top five.
